🌴 GOOD NEWS! ALABAMA’S BEACHES ARE OPEN AND WELCOMING VISITORS FOLLOWING HURRICANE ISAIAS!

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism has announced that Alabama’s beaches experienced minimal damage from Hurricane Isaias, which impacted the northern Gulf Coast on Friday, October 9.

While communities to our east in Florida suffered significant impacts, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach were fortunate to avoid the worst of the storm.

HERE’S THE LATEST UPDATE:

🌊 BEACH CONDITIONS: As of Sunday morning, Alabama’s beaches have returned to YELLOW FLAG CONDITIONS, an improvement from the double red flags that closed Gulf waters following the hurricane. Moderate surf and currents still require caution.

🚗 BRIDGES & EVACUATIONS: All bridges have reopened, and evacuation orders have been lifted.

🏖️ BEACHES & TOURISM: Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are welcoming visitors back to our 32 miles of beautiful white sand beaches.

🍽️ LOCAL BUSINESSES: Many restaurants, shops, attractions, and other businesses have already reopened, with additional city facilities expected to reopen Monday.

🏡 STORM DAMAGE: Both cities report relatively minor damage, with cleanup efforts continuing.

LOCAL LEADERS RESPOND:

Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft expressed gratitude for the limited damage, noting that many businesses were able to reopen just one day after the storm.

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon said the city was fortunate to avoid more serious impacts and is already returning to normal operations.

Beth Gendler, President & CEO of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, emphasized that the destination is ready to welcome visitors while keeping neighboring communities impacted by the hurricane in their thoughts.

OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE

While Alabama’s beaches were spared significant damage, our neighbors to the east are facing a much more difficult recovery.

Having experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sally in 2020, our Gulf Coast communities understand just how challenging hurricane recovery can be.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone impacted, and we thank the first responders, utility workers, and emergency personnel who have worked tirelessly throughout the storm.

BOTTOM LINE: Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are OPEN, businesses are reopening, and Alabama’s beaches are ready to welcome visitors back!

Have you been out around Gulf Shores or Orange Beach today? Let us know what you’ve seen reopening!

If you haven't been paying attention to the north side of the Intracoastal Waterway, you might want to start.

Gulf Shores is slowly creating something there that looks very different from the beach-centered town most people know.

The city announced this month that another phase of improvements to East 2nd Street is moving forward as part of the larger Waterway Village project.

And they're doing a lot more than repaving the street.

Plans include completely reconstructing East 2nd Street between East 22nd and East 23rd avenues, adding on-street parking, new sidewalks and upgraded stormwater infrastructure.

Then comes the part that could really change how the area looks.

The project calls for new pedestrian and street lighting, irrigation, medium and large trees, planting beds, turf, benches, planters and trash receptacles. Landscaping improvements will extend through additional portions of East 2nd Street on both sides of the new pedestrian bridge area.

The ultimate goal is a connected "complete street" running from East 22nd Avenue to Waterway East Boulevard.

This is part of a much bigger transformation.

Waterway Village is being developed as a walkable district along the Intracoastal Waterway, rather than another strip of development designed almost entirely around cars.

And once you remember what this area looked like years ago, the change becomes even more dramatic.

For generations, visitors thought of Gulf Shores as Highway 59 leading straight to the beach.

Now the city is trying to establish another gathering area around the waterway itself.

Restaurants.

Public spaces.

Walking connections.

Landscaping.

The pedestrian bridge.

And more improvements coming.

Gulf Shores' next "downtown" might not actually be down by the Gulf at all.

It might be growing beside the Intracoastal.
