Moving truths
For most, moving is not pleasant, with exception of the excitement of a new place. Our aim is to make the moving experience as pleasant a process as possible. To that end, we want every potential client to be informed, as there is a lack of or misinformation out there about moving. The more informed you are, the less likley to be taken advantage of.
Get multiple quotes!
Even a client that calls us first, I will tell them the same thing. Some people will just go with the first company they talk to if it's within budget or blindly follow someone they "trust". Yet, when visually there's multiple choices for a gas station, people would typically go to the lowest or price shop when buying a specific item.
Comparing quotes
Not all companies are the same with pricing, get the total. Consumers are bombarded to focus on the rate, so they miss the fine print or add-ons. Add-ons vary, so you'll have to do the math if not given a total.
Ex:
Company A- $160/hr, 6 hr job
=$960
Company B- $130/hr, $130 drive fee, $80 materials, $25 stair fee, 6 hr job =$1015
Company C- $140/hr, $100 fuel fee, $50 materials, $30 stairs, 6hr job = $990
It's not necessarily deceptive, just like any subject, people have different views, but math will be true.
Reviews & Recommendations
Companies vary, in pricing, workers, services, knowledge, equipment etc. Workers being the key component for time, outside of location difficulties, both their knowledge and work ethic. Sadly, you may not know if guys are "lounge workers" that inflate time vs guys who want to get back to their families until well into the move.
Reviews are a great way to find out about how a company's history, however, not everyone does a review, unless something bad happens, then that's nearly a guaranteed review.
Recommendations are also a tough call. There are other companies that get paid to do recommendations and reviews, so you're not always getting the truth on social media. Why not ask your real neighbors around you? There should be a couple different companies to start you off.
Unlicensed
Absolutely the cheapest way to move, if everything goes right. Injuries can easily happen, not being used to moving items daily and how much is lost not being able to work? An unlicensed "mover" has no insurance, so any damage to home or items is just a loss, no real recourse. Less cost with getting labor off social media, but same risk. Lastly, theres the the risk of who you let into your homes. A real company, has the risk of its reputation on the line, while random people its an unknown.
Bonded vs Insured
Every legitimate mover is bonded, Insured or both.
Bonded- Protects customers against fraud, misrepresentation, breach of contract, malfeasance, or financial failure by the mover. (Nothing for damage of any kind.)
Insured- Insured movers carry 3 insurances, auto, cargo and general liability. Cargo to cover items, GL to cover home and property, auto for their vehicle.
Underinsured
The common belief is if anything gets damaged during a move, it gets replaced by insurance, which is unfortunately wrong. Standard coverage pays out at $0.60/lb/article, with higher coverage available at more cost and not everything is considered covered. Also, items are not typically new, they're used, so understand it's not worth the $1000's paid years ago.
Finally, ask what their cargo coverage amount is, as a lot operate at the minimum of $10,000 per shipment. Should an accident occur, some of us will repair or replace, but understand it is at our discretion to chose.
At the end of the day, it's up to you how much you look into options and who you choose. In this day and age, expectations vs reality, is becoming a bigger gap. My hope is that this information is at least helpful to your search.
