Kelly Ripa’s Halloween tour comes with a real-estate backstory: she and Mark Consuelos paid $27 million for their Manhattan townhouse in 2013. Their former Soho penthouse was bought for $9.5 million and later sold for $20 million. No new sale was announced. Today’s Stories. Kim Kardashian brought All’s Fair to NYC, Spike Lee’s red Yankees cap became a fashion statement, and Sam Rockwell reflected on becoming a New York actor. I’m also looking at Phoenix’s chip-driven growth, flood-risk questions, Cape Town’s luxury shortage, celebrity-backed prediction markets, NYC parents making one-bedrooms work, power-line disputes and Scott Gillen’s troubled Malibu development. The project entities’ Chapter 11 proceedings don’t automatically mean personal bankruptcy. Whether it’s a townhouse or a smaller apartment, look beyond the headline: what does it cost, what surrounds it, and does it support the life you want?

Kendall Jenner’s Tribeca connection wasn’t a purchase. During 2016 New York Fashion Week, she and Kylie stayed at 15 Leonard Street in a 7,250-square-foot residence advertised for $26.5 million; ELLE reported complimentary accommodation. Today’s Stories. Sticky Fingaz connects Flatbush, Manhattan’s High School of Art and Design and South Jamaica, Queens. William Cullen Bryant’s West 16th Street brownstone was bought for $30,000 against a $40,000 asking price—with $21,000 cash and a temporary $9,000 mortgage. Walker Evans had a documented Brooklyn Heights apartment association, but his birth certificate records November 2, not November 3. I’m also looking back at the second Madison Square Garden’s 1900 automobile show, Louis Chevrolet’s Brooklyn chapter, Godzilla’s nuclear background, The Wizard of Oz’s TV debut and Judy Garland’s later Dakota residence, and One World Trade Center’s 2014 opening. New York real estate always makes more sense when you understand the history behind the address. Manhattan

A $750,000 annual asking rent for Gigi Hadid’s new Madison Avenue boutique caught my attention—but the signed rent wasn’t disclosed, and this was a lease, not a building purchase.

Today’s Stories. also follows Harry Styles’ 30 nights at Madison Square Garden and reported $8.71 million Tribeca purchase; Jordan Firstman’s Club Kid party at the Ukrainian National Home; Amy Poehler’s comedy honor at MoMA; and the Brancusi exhibition.

On the property side, an H&M-anchored Fifth Avenue leasehold is seeking up to $300 million, compared with approximately $365 million paid in 2019. That’s an asking expectation versus an earlier ground-lease transaction—not a completed-sale loss.

I’m also looking at housing and food expenses, reuse of overlooked buildings, surf-community fees, Date Night at The Met, resilient prices in a slow market, small bedrooms, mortgage timing, operating costs, refinancing gaps and habitability.

You know Ross Geller. But do you know David Schwimmer’s actual New York property story?

Today’s Stories. His reported $4.1 million East Village purchase in 2010 led to demolition, a replacement townhouse and preservation criticism. That figure was the acquisition price, not the construction budget. Ross’s apartment life was fictional.

November 2 also brings Burt Lancaster’s East Harlem beginnings, James Dunn’s Astoria studio work, Earl “Speedo” Carroll’s P.S. 87 years, Prodigy and Havoc’s school friendship, Shere Hite’s Fifth Avenue chapter and Nelly’s unfinished Missouri mansion. Hite’s reported valuation is not a purchase price; Nelly’s reported historical figures are not a complete investment accounting.

Then we follow George Washington’s separate farewells, the Dakotas’ signing mystery, suffrage and the 1920 election, Howard Hughes’s single H-4 flight, Charles Van Doren’s Bleecker Street connection and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Harlem history and holiday legislation.

An address can reveal the people, decisions and history that helped shape a neighborhood.

Your housing budget includes more than the mortgage rate.

Today’s Stories. If your payment increased, compare your old and new statements. Was it principal and interest, property taxes, homeowners insurance or an escrow shortage? Check the actual bills against the servicer’s figures and request an itemized explanation.

Paying an escrow shortage may not remove an ongoing increase caused by higher future bills. If an adjustable rate is resetting, review the notice, adjustment schedule and caps.

For NYC neighbors, co-op maintenance, condo common charges and assessments can increase separately. Include all of them in your monthly budget.

If the payment becomes unaffordable, contact your servicer early and consider a HUD-approved housing counselor. Put suspected errors in writing and retain copies.

Today’s Stories. Jennifer Connelly and Joshua Bassett were announced for the November 1 NYC Marathon, and Tracy Morgan is grand marshal. The course turns 50, but announced participation does not confirm anyone’s result, and the grand marshal role does not mean Morgan ran.

The real-estate headline: Richard Saghian reportedly paid $31 million for a roughly 7,700-square-foot penthouse at 111 Murray Street—almost $3 million below its $33.95 million ask. Then I break down Brooklyn Marine Terminal opposition, Manhattan luxury contracts, election policy, rent concessions, partial-interest sales, millionaire renters, green-office premiums, the Lower East Side’s Sure Thing Chapel and office conversions.

The practical part matters most: if your mortgage payment rises, identify whether taxes, insurance, escrow or the loan changed. An ARM profiled by The Wall Street Journal could move from 2.75% to 7.75%, adding a reported $2,500 monthly. Also: Ashley Graham, construction costs, flexible rooms and Kevin Hart at Soho House New York.

Anthony Kiedis, Penn Badgley and Fifth Avenue’s Greenwich Village beginning—Today’s Stories.

Badgley’s New York housing path includes Bushwick, a Williamsburg loft he owned and sold, and a Park Slope apartment purchase, though exact addresses, dates and prices weren’t established. Other November 1 birthdays take us to Lou Donaldson’s Harlem, Stephen Antonakos’s Bay Ridge upbringing, Peter Ostrum’s upstate veterinary career, Ronald Bell, Nita Ambani and Alfred Wegener.

Fifth Avenue opened its first stretch from Washington Square North to 13th Street in 1824. The date also connects the Astoria Hotel, Sherry-Netherland, affordable Amalgamated Houses, Rockefeller Center and John Adams moving into the unfinished White House. We also visit the Crystal Palace exhibition at today’s Bryant Park, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, the 1864 start of U.S. money orders and coordinated 1870 weather reports from 24 stations.

A Beastie Boy, giant puppets and a road from Times Square to San Francisco. Today’s Stories. October 31, 2026.

Ad-Rock turns 60! Manhattan-born Adam Keefe Horovitz joined the Beastie Boys in 1982. His Tibetan Freedom Concert appearances were part of activism led by bandmate Adam Yauch.

Today’s walk also takes us through Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, Nevada before Las Vegas and the Lincoln Highway’s October 31, 1913 dedication.

For Halloween, we connect Irish immigrant traditions with Ralph Lee’s Greenwich Village parade and Westbeth Artists Housing. After Sandy canceled the parade in 2012, it returned in 2013; after the 2020 pandemic cancellation, it returned in 2021.

Birthday stories also include Ron Rifkin, Sally Kirkland, Dan Rather, Jane Pauley, Dermot Mulroney, Vanessa Marano, Holly Earl and Tom Paxton.

Paxton’s Gaslight Cafe connection is a reminder that a small neighborhood stage can send songs far beyond the block.

Would you spend four days touring a $295 million home without making an offer? Kanye West reportedly did exactly that in Malibu—although the article does not say he made an offer. Today’s Stories.

Kylie Jenner withdrew a mansion marketed for $38 million after a $10 million reduction. Knicks star Josh Hart and his wife, Shannon, reduced their Florida asking price to $5.699 million after paying about $4.75 million.

Back in New York, Cynthia Erivo was honored at Lincoln Center; emerging stars gathered for the TIME100 Next Gala; and renters are still reporting questionable fees despite the FARE Act. We also visit the planned Torch tower in Times Square, Bryant Park’s Winter Village, MoMA and two listings where brokers stepped into the photographs to demonstrate scale.

The financial stories matter too: a 7% mortgage may preserve liquidity, but investment returns are not guaranteed. More national inventory creates choices, not automatic bargains. Compare the complete monthly cost and ask whether ownership fits your budget and life.
