Mortgage markets enter the final week of September under renewed rate pressure. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate moved above 7% last week, with Freddie Mac reporting an average of 7.03% as of September 24, up from 6.95% the prior week and 6.30% one year ago. The Federal Reserve also raised the federal-funds target range by 25 basis points on September 16 to 3.75%-4.00%, citing elevated inflation. The combination of higher Treasury yields, persistent inflation and a Fed that is no longer easing has created a significantly more challenging rate environment for borrowers and originators.
