This is great news!

NEW TRAIL UPDATE! The long-anticipated bike and pedestrian trail, which will connect the Wekiva Trail in Sorrento to downtown Mount Dora and Tavares, passed a major hurdle today when the Lake County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to purchase the nearly 11-mile railroad corridor, which would eventually tie into the Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail. The area's two railroad companies, CSX and Florida Central Railroad, have made clear they have no interest in operating a train on those tracks.

An agreement to purchase the nearly 110-acre property was already in place, and today's approval will enable funding for the $23.5 million purchase and qualify the project for a build grant. The trail is a joint venture between Lake County, the Trust for Public Land, the City of Mount Dora, and the City of Tavares. The purchase is expected to be funded by a bond measure, which could be revisited in November pending voters' decision on Florida's Amendment 3.

At the meeting, the vast majority of community members spoke in favor of the outdoor recreational amenity and economic development investment, including business leaders, cyclists, Mount Dora and Tavares City Council members, and officials from other local governments.

The trail has been in the making for twenty-one years. Its Trail Master Plan was first adopted in 2008 and readopted in 2018.
