You may have heard this before - spend your money on experiences, and not just things.* Well, I recently did just that, and boy what an experience I had!

Since I was a kid, I have loved the movie, "Airplane!" It's definitely the most quotable movie ever made, and it's a riot from start to finish.

I found out that they were having a special screening of the film at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, followed by a Q&A with the stars of the film, Robert Hays (who played Ted Striker) and Julie Hagerty (who played Elaine Dickinson) How could I miss that?

I got tickets, and my good friend, super attorney Scott Luxenberg of Menz & Luxenberg in Kendall Park, and I were off to see it.

Seeing the movie with a crowd of devotees was amazing. Everyone would clap when one of the stars first came on the screen, and people were reciting along with many of the famous lines of the film:

"Surely you can't be serious!"
"I am serious. And don't call me Shirley."

After the credits of the film ended (if you've never watched the credits to the film, you've been missing out!), Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty came on stage for the Q&A portion, and they told a number of great stories about how they were cast, funny tales of making the movie, and even how Robert Hays brought his parents to the set. It was fantastic.

At the end of the night, we were able to attend the meet and greet for the stars, and they were just two incredibly gracious people. They met a lot of fans that night but still made you feel like you were the only one they were meeting. Really lovely people. This was one experience we won't soon forget.

In 2015, I made a video about how to tell if you're buying a haunted house.

That video got thousands of views and had people from all over the country contacting me. I decided it was time for another update!

This time, I have more things you can look for and questions to ask that may help you determine if the home you're buying has unwanted residents!

Do you know about the woman buried in the movie theater parking lot?

If you drive to the back parking lot behind the AMC movie theater on Route 1 in New Brunswick, you'll see a single, solitary grave that rises about 7 feet above the ground. I'll admit, the first time I stumbled upon it, I was shocked. Why would there be a grave in a movie theater parking lot? Who is buried there? And why is it so high off the ground?

To answer those questions, we need to go back over 200 years. A woman named Mary Ellis, born in 1750, lived in New Brunswick on Livingston Avenue. As the legend goes, she had fallen in love with a sea captain, and they were to wed when he returned from his voyage. He had left his horse in her care, and she would ride that horse from New Brunswick to the banks of the Raritan River to await his return.

The years went by, and Mary eventually purchased that property overlooking the Raritan, where she lived for 14 years until she died in 1828 at the age of 78. The sea captain she had loved had never returned, and she was buried on the property where she would ride to meet him.

As the years passed, the surrounding area was built up, and that property became the location of a number of different businesses. In 1943, it became the site of the Raritan Amusement Playland Park, and in 1965, it was sold and developed into the Great Eastern Department Store. In 1975, it became the Route 1 Flea Market, and then it was sold years later to become the AMC movie theater.

When the property was sold to make way for the AMC movie theater, the parking lot was regraded, resulting in the grave towering seven feet above the ground, and there Mary Ellis (and some other family members buried with her) remain to this day.

While some people doubt the veracity of the tale of the sea captain and Mary Ellis waiting for his return, it's interesting to see this one grave in the parking lot of the movie theater and the incredible history of our area. Next time you're in the area, go say hello to Mary!

After losing a loved one, it’s difficult to navigate all the chapters you need to close in their absence while processing the loss. I try to make the process as simple as possible. So many questions come up - What do we do with everything in the home? How do we get the home ready to sell? How do we handle all of this while still trying to deal with everything else in our lives? It can be a lot, but with the right process, we can make it easier.

This was the case with Joy and her family. Joy's grandmother had passed away, and now it was time to say goodbye to this home that had held so many wonderful memories for the entire family. I met with the family and went over what they could do to get the home ready to sell. After our meeting, they let me know that they might have a potential buyer. I told them they could reach out if they had any questions.

Well, the buyer wound up falling through, and they needed to get the home on the market, so I sprang into action. I had my photographer come out, a video about the home was made (that got over 63,000 views!), and we soon had showings started. After receiving multiple offers, we settled on one that had great terms and was 10% over asking!

Most importantly, I was there to guide Joy and her family through every step of the process - attorney review, home inspections, municipal inspections, and more. They could focus on their lives while I handled all of the details.

We got to closing day, and I know it was a great relief to have had everything go so smoothly. I'm truly honored I could help them through the process.

On Saturday evening, our doorbell rang. It was dark out and raining. I wondered who on earth it could be.

As I approached my door, I saw a flashlight bobbing around outside. As I opened the door, I noticed an Amazon delivery person wearing a headlamp (to be honest, it's a smart move walking in the dark). He smiled and said, "I have your delivery for you," as he handed me the package. I thanked him and he went on his way.

After I closed the door, I looked at the package. He had attached a hand written note to it that said, "Happy to deliver your order to the door of your house. May God bless you."

I was just blown away.

In a world where people seem to want to do the least amount possible, doing just enough to get by in their job, this man did something extraordinary.

You see, it doesn't matter what you do in life, it matters how you do it - to take your job seriously, to do the best you can, and to do it with a sense of pride. This man is knocking it out of the park on all counts.

He embodies the very American notion that, if you work hard and try your best, you can get ahead in this country. You just have to be willing to serve others to the best of your ability. When we all do that, each of us using our special talents to serve each other, we can go far together.

I wish I could have realized what a gift he was giving me before he walked away and I closed the door, but I hope God blesses him more richly than he could have imagined.

Have you ever been unsure of what to do?

I was reminded recently of a trip to BJ's I took a few years ago. As I was walking through the store, grabbing items, I noticed a woman wearing office scrubs (I guessed she worked in a doctor's office or somewhere similar), pushing a cart with six cases of bottled water. I noticed she was small in stature, and wondered who would drink all that water.

I paid for my items and headed out to my car. As I was putting my cart back in the cart corral (because I'm a human being and not an animal), I saw that same woman walk up to her car, just about 20 feet away from me.

I thought to myself, should I offer to help her put that water in her car?

Then I thought, but what if I offer to help her and she gets mad at me, believing I assumed she couldn't move those six cases of water on her own?

My third thought was what sealed the deal. I thought, what if I just ask her if she needs help, and not worry about her reaction? I'll just be friendly.

So I walked up to her, and as deferentially as I could, said, "Hi, could you use any help with that water?"

This look of relief came over her and she said, "Oh my God, thank you! I had no idea how I was going to get all of this water in my car!" I loaded everything in her car, and she was very grateful. We both walked away happy.

It was a great lesson. Now, when someone looks like they might need help, I just ask them. Sometimes they say no, sometimes they say yes, but I feel better for at least trying to do something. Imagine what the world would be like if we all did this. Give it a try next time you're out!

And, of course, call me if I can be of help to you someday!

Sometimes, people can experience culture shock when moving to New Jersey from another state, but it's always a good culture shock.

I had listed a home in North Brunswick, and was able to get my clients multiple offers. They picked the best offer for them, which turned out to be a couple moving here from Brooklyn. We went through the whole transaction smoothly, and we closed. The buyers moved in, and my clients moved out of state.

A week or so after the closing, one of the buyers called me. Apparently, a package had been delivered to the seller at their now previous house, and the new owner asked me if I would like to come pick it up for them (retrieving packages post-closing is one of the many functions of a good agent that rarely gets discussed).

I told him that I would be happy to pick it up, and said he could leave it on his porch.

He was incredulous. "Really?"

I said, "Yes, of course, why?"

He said, "Oh, we're from Brooklyn, and we never let packages stay outside."

I replied, "Oh, we don't get too many porch pirates around here. Just leave the package outside and I'll come pick it up later today." And I did exactly that.

It was lovely that he cared enough to not want the package to be stolen, and I was glad I could let him know that neighbors tend to look out for each other around here, and he didn't have to worry.

One thing I do like to tell my clients, though, is that, when you make your move, make sure you update your address on Amazon, Chewy, and any other place that makes deliveries to you. It makes everything a lot easier.

And if you have a question about making a move yourself, feel free to reach out! I'll be sure to deliver!
