The most expensive house in Aspen is the one you haven't built yet.

I did the math on buying a lot in Starwood and building. The land, the county, the permits, the years. And a lot of Advil.

Then I put it next to 542 Carroll Drive.

Two weeks or four years. Which would you pick?

The path down the hill, laid in stone. The grass has gone gold, the yellow flowers along the edge are still out, and the peaks are clear across the valley. Four ski mountains from one spot on the property.

This is what 38 acres at 8,770 feet looks like in the second week of September. Aspen, Colorado, a few weeks before the whole valley turns.

Which week do you come up for the color?

The guest house. Al Beyer drew it to match the main house. Built in 2023.

Charred cedar, burned black on purpose so the weather cannot get at it. The roof reaches out over the glass. 544 on the wall. Down the slope from the main house, with its own entrance and its own view down the valley.

Thirty-eight acres in Starwood, Aspen, Colorado.

There is something about serendipity in this life.

In the 1970s my father, Gerald Leonard Solomon, played quarterback on the sand at 85th Street in Miami Beach. The other quarterback was a guy named Steven Hunt Grabow.

A firecracker, a phone book cover, and an unsolved murder in Aspen. Last week I found something in my old junk that connected me to all of it.

Sometime in 2008, while doing payroll, I cut a check for an obscene amount to one of the principal's partners. After it was signed I had to deliver it myself.

My windows were open. On Pine Tree Drive a gust of wind took the envelope out of my car and blew it right to the heavens.

I scoured the east side of the street for two hours, into the dark. I couldn't find it. So I called my Dad.

2880 Fairgreen Drive · Miami Beach

The 1933 house is gone. What is left is a corner lot in Mid Beach with 235 feet of frontage on two streets, and a complete sealed set of drawings by Touzet Studio, AIA Miami Firm of the Year.

We are in for permit with the City of Miami Beach.

The house is lifted. You walk underneath it through a covered outdoor living room, dining and kitchen. A glass rotunda with a spiral stair and an elevator anchors the corner. Two kitchens, a gym, a pool at grade with the lawn behind it, a roof terrace.

The slowest and most expensive year of a ground up build is already done and conveys with the lot.

Bring your builder, or refine the plans and make them yours. Either way you start years ahead.

The call came at 7 PM. The broker would not tell me who his buyer was. So I told him: if it isn't Donald Trump, we need 24-hour notice.

He gave me the name.

"I'm on the way." I ran out of the house as fast as I could and was at the property in no time.

The new As Is is up. The story ends at 2880 Fairgreen Drive.
