No smartphones. No Google Maps. No online reviews. And nobody was finding their moving company on Facebook.

But people still needed someone they could trust to move their homes.

Brooks Moving has been doing just that since 1983.

A lot has changed over the past four decades, but the fundamentals haven't: show up, work hard, take care of people's belongings, and treat customers the way you'd want to be treated.

It’s a question we get all the time, and the answer is: it depends.

Lightweight clothing and linens are fine to leave in your dressers. But books, paperwork, valuables, breakables (like perfume), and other heavy items should come out.

Why? Extra weight can make furniture harder to safely move — and can put unnecessary stress on the dresser itself. We also want to protect your belongings. Those items are more likely to slide around and become lost.

Every piece of furniture is a little different, so if you’re unsure, just ask us before moving day. We’ll let you know the best way to prepare it.

🏠 MOVING MYTH: “The movers can just take everything.”

Not quite!

There are certain things that shouldn't — or sometimes can't — travel on a moving truck. That can include hazardous or flammable materials, propane tanks, gasoline, certain chemicals and other potentially dangerous items.

Then there are things we recommend keeping with you: medications, important documents, jewelry, cash, keys and anything you'll need immediate access to.

Not sure about something you're planning to move? Ask us before moving day. We'd much rather answer the question ahead of time than have you scrambling that morning.

MOVING TIP: Pack an “Open First” box.

One of the easiest ways to make your first night in a new home less stressful is to pack one box that doesn't disappear into the sea of moving boxes.

Think about what you'll need before you have the energy to start unpacking:

Toilet paper, paper towels, phone chargers, medications, basic toiletries, a change of clothes, coffee supplies, pet essentials, a few basic tools — and anything the kids will absolutely need that first night.

Label it OPEN FIRST and make sure you know exactly where it is.

It's a small thing that can make a BIG difference after a long moving day.

The short answer? As soon as you know you're moving.

Moving schedules can fill quickly, especially at the end of the month, during the summer, and around holidays. Booking early gives you a better chance of getting the date that works best for you — and gives you one less thing to worry about as moving day approaches.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the extraordinary courage of the first responders, service members, and everyday Americans who stepped forward in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

25 years later, we remember.
We remember those who never made it home.
We remember those who ran toward danger to help others.
And we remember the unity, strength, and compassion our country showed in the days that followed.
