When space is limited, the right tenant mix matters even more.

As retail availability remains tight, landlords have an opportunity to be increasingly intentional about the concepts they bring into their centers and how those tenants serve the surrounding community.

Our COO, Lauren Ball, recently spoke with REjournals about what’s driving demand across today’s retail landscape, from restaurants and specialty grocery to fitness, healthcare, beauty and childcare.

With decades of experience in retail real estate, Lauren knows strong retail isn’t simply about filling space. It’s about understanding the market, knowing the consumer and building a tenant mix positioned to perform for the long term.

Thank you to REjournals for including Lauren and Westwood in the conversation.

Five questions. Nearly 60 years of perspective. And a few answers that might surprise you. 👀

One year into leading Westwood Financial, K.C. Bills sat down with Al Urbanski at Chain Store Age to talk all things grocery-anchored retail, from the unexpected retailers driving growth to what makes a great shopping center work beyond the anchor.

Some answers might surprise you. Others are rooted in what we’ve learned after nearly six decades in the business.

One thing’s for certain: we’re proud to have KC leading the way and even prouder to see his perspective featured in Chain Store Age.

Thank you to Al for the conversation and for featuring Westwood! 📰

Something spooky is happening at the shopping center. 👻

Halloween may be October 31, but consumers aren't waiting until October to celebrate—and neither is retail.

At Old Town Shopping Center in Dallas, August foot traffic increased 11.35% year over year, according to Advan Research. Michaels and Tom Thumb both saw year-over-year gains during the same period, as consumers headed into a fall season increasingly shaped by DIY, décor and trends that move from social feeds to shopping lists faster than ever.

For us, the interesting part isn't just Halloween. It's what the shift says about tenant mix.

As consumer interests evolve, combining the consistency of grocery with complementary specialty retailers can give neighborhood centers more opportunities to participate in the moments driving consumers to shop.

This Halloween, DIY appears to be having its moment. Next season, it could be something entirely different.

The trick may just be in the mix.

Surf’s up, Huntington Beach. 🌊 Westwood has officially arrived.

We’re entering the market for the first time with the acquisition of Peninsula Marketplace — a 95,416-square-foot, 99% leased shopping center anchored by Ralphs.

And while Huntington Beach may be a new market for Westwood, the fundamentals behind this acquisition are anything but new to us.

“Grocery-anchored retail has been a key driver of Westwood’s success for nearly 60 years,” said COO Lauren Ball. “As a legacy owner and operator in Southern California, we’re excited about the opportunities ahead as the market continues to strengthen.”

CEO K.C. Bills added, “The combination of strong tenant performance, an established grocery anchor and limited surrounding supply gives us confidence in the center’s long-term potential.”

1.5M+ annual visits. 99% leased. An established grocery anchor. And now, our first property in Huntington Beach.

New market. Familiar fundamentals. Welcome to Westwood, Peninsula Marketplace. 🌴

Good food, even better conversation.

Lauren Ball recently joined an incredible group of women leaders in Atlanta for an intimate dinner hosted by KeyBank Institutional Real Estate at Springs Center.

With leaders across operations, finance, investment management, logistics, residential and banking around one table, the evening brought together different perspectives on the market, shared challenges and where the industry is headed next.

Thank you to KeyBank Institutional Real Estate — Callae O’Hara, Terri Hill and Kristin Centracchio — for bringing everyone together, and to Wendy Gill, Jennifer Ginzberg, Stefanie Korczyk and Jennifer Power for such a thoughtful evening.

There’s something powerful about getting smart women around the same table. We’re grateful Lauren had a seat at it.

Consider this your clue. 👀

Lauren Ball, David Mitroff, and Pete Anastasi are on the ground in San Diego for ICSC WESTERN, connecting with industry peers and talking opportunities across retail real estate.

From strengthening long-standing relationships to making new connections, our team is spending the day doing what we value most: getting face-to-face with the people shaping our industry and exploring what’s next.

If you're at ICSC Western today, reach out to Lauren, David, or Pete to connect. And if you happen to cross paths with them first, we'd say that's a pretty good sign.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

We remember the first responders who ran toward danger while thousands were trying to escape it.

We remember the passengers and crew of Flight 93, ordinary people who, in an unimaginable moment, chose to act—knowing what it could cost them.

We remember the hundreds of search and rescue dogs and their handlers who worked through the rubble at Ground Zero, searching for survivors, aiding recovery efforts and, in the days that followed, providing comfort when it was needed most.

And we remember the countless acts of courage that may never have made a headline: strangers helping strangers, coworkers carrying one another to safety, volunteers arriving to help, and communities across the country finding ways to serve.

September 11, 2001 was a day of tremendous loss. But amid that loss were extraordinary examples of courage, compassion, sacrifice and unity.

Twenty-five years later, we honor the 2,977 lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, the families who carry their memories, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

Today, we remember not only what happened, but how people responded to one another when it mattered most.

We remember them. We honor them. We will never forget.

We’re growing our team — and adding nearly 15 years of commercial real estate experience along with it. 👋

Please join us in welcoming Pete Anastasi to Westwood Financial as Vice President of Acquisitions. Pete will lead our acquisitions team, helping drive Westwood’s investment activity and identify opportunities across the country as we continue to strategically grow our portfolio.

Pete joins us from Brixmor Property Group, bringing extensive experience in retail real estate and acquisitions and a strong understanding of the fundamentals that drive long-term value.

He also happens to be a true Atlanta native — something that feels increasingly rare in a city made up of people from just about everywhere. Born and raised in Atlanta, Pete has built his career here and will be based in Westwood’s Atlanta office.

We’re excited to add Pete’s experience, perspective, and leadership to our team and look forward to what’s ahead.

Please join us in giving Pete a warm Westwood welcome!
