A mold problem in a brand-new attic can start before the roof ever goes on.
These roof trusses appear to be stored directly on the dirt. Ground contact and exposure to rain can keep the wood damp, creating conditions that encourage microbial growthâcommonly called moldâbefore the trusses are even installed.
That doesnât mean every truss pictured has mold, but poor material storage can contribute to the problems we later find in new-construction attics.
Trusses should be stored off the ground on proper supports and protected from prolonged moisture exposure while allowing airflow. Wet or visibly affected materials should be evaluated and properly addressed before being enclosed.
New construction deserves an inspection, too. Quality starts with how the materials are handledânot just how the finished home looks.
