🎃 For decades, Long Beach kids have whispered about the gates on La Linda Drive. The legend says Wizard of Oz Munchkin actors built tiny homes back here. The truth? Bixby Knolls is a tree-lined Long Beach neighborhood known for custom homes built between the 1920s and 1940s so much character that Dexter used it to stand in for Miami. The Trinity Killer’s house (season 4, John Lithgow) is in Los Cerritos Neighborhood of Bixby Knolls and Lieutenant LaGuerta’s house (seasons 3 and 7) is down the block on the same street , built in 1928.

Hollywood picked it for the same reasons buyers do: established streets, mature trees, architecture you can’t build today, and a real sense of community. Homes like these don’t come up often, and when they do, buyers need someone who knows the neighborhood street by street.

Hurricane Polo and Marie, Long Beach has done this before. On September 25, 1939 a tropical storm they called The Lash of St. Francis came ashore near San Pedro with 65 mph gusts and five inches of rain in a day. Waves tore 10 homes off their foundations on the Peninsula and Belmont Shore and pulled them into the ocean. Scores more were left as driftwood. It hit so hard the weather bureau built the Southern California forecast office that still operates today. Eighty seven years later Marie’s swell hit the same narrow strip. Will Hurricane Polo have the same effect?

Before there was an airport on Spring St… there was a flying field in Bixby Knolls. ✈️

In 1919, Long Beach aviator Earl Daugherty opened a 20-acre flight school and airfield at Bixby Rd & Long Beach Blvd. He named it Chateau Thierry, after the WWI battle in France. The name stuck, and the homes built there later still carry it today.

Who was Earl Daugherty?
🛩️ In 1911 he became the first licensed pilot in Long Beach, and only the 87th in the country.

🛩️ During WWI he was an Army flight instructor.

🛩️ He built his own planes, did stunts, and hired a wing walker.

🛩️ Locals called him “The King of Aviation.”

🛩️ He even got married while flying his own plane over Long Beach.

His airfield outgrew Bixby Rd fast. By 1920 he had moved to a bigger field near Long Beach Blvd & Willow. Amelia Earhart went to his air show there in December 1920, and that’s where she decided to become a pilot.

In 1923 the city set aside land at Spring & Cherry, and the new field opened in 1924. It was Southern California’s first municipal airport. Earl died in a stunt crash in 1928, but the airport still carries his name: Daugherty Field, Long Beach Airport.

Next time you drive through Chateau Thierry, look up. 👀

I’m teaching a class today at Bixby University, and this is the story behind it 100 years of homes in Bixby Knolls.

Tongva land. A Spanish grant in 1784. An 1844 adobe that’s still standing a mile from here. A rancher named Jotham Bixby who decided the future was in lots, not livestock. Oil on Signal Hill in 1921 that made this land worth more subdivided than grazed. And then a front-page announcement on October 17, 1929 120 acres east of Atlantic, promised to be “what Wilshire is to Los Angeles.”
The market crashed twelve days later. They opened the tract anyway.
