Any guesses what this space will be for our client ?! Hint: there’s a small Easter egg in one of the clips 👀

But we’re pleased making progress on a pretty incredible custom home here at Lake of the Ozarks, and I thought it would be fun to give you a little sneak peek at what’s happening on the lower level.

There’s still a LOT of work to do, but if you look closely, you can start to see some pretty interesting features taking shape.

This is definitely not going to be your typical basement! We’ve got some really fun plans for this space, and I’m so excited to watch it all come together.

But before I show you anything else…

WHAT DO YOU THINK WE’RE BUILDING DOWN HERE?!

Look closely at the layout and drop your best guess in the comments!

A designer’s dream… a TV that disappears when you’re not using it! 🙌

One of my favorite features in this pool house is actually something you wouldn’t even notice when it’s not being used. We have this beautiful, oversized stone feature wall that really anchors the entire space. And the LAST thing I wanted was a giant TV permanently covering it up.

But let’s be realistic… this is a pool house at the Lake of the Ozarks! It’s meant for entertaining, watching sports, hosting friends and family, and spending time together. So why not have both?

We incorporated a motorized projector screen that’s recessed into the ceiling. When it’s time for the big game or movie night, it drops down and completely transforms the space. When you’re finished, it disappears and that beautiful stone wall gets to be the focal point again.

THIS is the kind of versatility I love incorporating into my projects. I always tell my clients that beautiful design and functionality should work together. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice one for the other.

And sometimes the best design decisions are the ones you don’t even notice until you need them. I can’t wait to share more details from this pool house as well! Isn’t it beautiful?!

Normalize the messy middle…We live in a world where we’re constantly shown the finished product. Perfectly styled homes. Beautiful renderings. AI generated spaces that can bring an idea to life in seconds. And while I love all of that, I think we forget to give enough credit to this part.

The construction dust. The unfinished walls. The materials stacked everywhere. The hundreds of decisions being made behind the scenes. The moments when a client has to look at what feels like complete chaos and trust that I can already see what it’s becoming.

Especially with so many of my clients living out of state, that trust is a huge part of what I do. They aren’t always standing beside me on the jobsite. Sometimes they have to trust the plans, trust the decisions we’re making, and trust that all of these individual pieces are going to come together the way we envisioned them.

The mess and the chaos are temporary. And as much as we love showing you all of our beautifully finished homes, I think the messy middle deserves a little more respect.

This is where that beauty is actually built.

Sink or no sink in the kitchen island? Apparently, the socials have some strong opinions about this one.

My answer? … It depends on the kitchen.

If the space and floor plan allow me to keep the island completely uninterrupted, I usually love taking advantage of it. A large, clean island gives you an incredible surface for entertaining, serving, gathering and everyday life without a faucet and sink breaking it up.

In this project, we had the luxury of doing exactly that.

We were able to move the sink to the perimeter cabinetry, place it underneath a window, and give our clients a pretty incredible lake view while they’re using it. Meanwhile, this massive island gets to remain exactly what we wanted it to be: one beautiful, uninterrupted statement.

But I wouldn’t force that decision into every kitchen. Sometimes the layout, work triangle, plumbing, perimeter space or functionality of the room makes an island sink the better choice.

That’s where good space planning and working with your designer from the start plays a big difference. We plan/design for the room you actually have, not the rule the internet told you to follow…
