Homeownership Costs Go Beyond Closing
So many first-time homeowners are surprised by the true costs of owning a home—beyond just the monthly mortgage. In a 2026 survey, 63% of Americans underestimated these expenses, and an even higher 73% of first-time buyers misjudged what homeownership really asks of them after closing. The financial strain is real: 64% felt stressed, 56% dipped into savings or emergency funds, 55% had to cut back on daily spending, and 41% ended up taking on more debt.
As someone who’s spent over two decades serving our Tri-Cities community, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to prepare for more than just closing day. Life brings unexpected costs—childcare, medical bills, student loans, job changes—and these can impact your home journey. That’s why I believe education shouldn’t stop at the closing table. Simple tools like maintenance checklists, seasonal reminders, and guidance on building equity can make all the difference. Helping clients budget, plan for emergencies, and better understand their long-term financial picture is one way I strive to make the process less overwhelming and more empowering. For me, turning a transaction into a lasting relationship is what truly matters.
