John Adams was a Massachusetts lawyer, political thinker, and one of the most influential voices behind American independence. Before the Revolution, he strongly defended the principles of due process and the right to a fair trial, even when it was unpopular. After the Boston Massacre, Adams represented the British soldiers in court, arguing that the rule of law mattered more than public anger.
As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Adams became a leading advocate for independence and played a major role in pushing the colonies toward separation from Britain. He helped guide and support Thomas Jefferson during the drafting of the Declaration of Independence.
Adams later served as a diplomat in Europe, helping negotiate the Treaty of Paris that officially ended the Revolutionary War and securing critical financial support from foreign governments, especially the Dutch Republic.
As president from 1797 to 1801, he kept the young nation out of full-scale war with France during the Quasi-War, despite intense political pressure. During his administration, he also became the first president to live in the executive mansion later known as the White House.
John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams, were notably among the few early presidents who never owned slaves.
U.S. Presidents have had one of the most difficult jobs in the country and whether we love them, hate them, or don’t even know who they are, they deserve our respect.
