Oahu pumpkins don’t freeze. They mold. 🎃
Most pumpkin carving tips were written for cold climates. Here, humidity is the problem, and a carved pumpkin can start caving in within two days.
Three things that’ll get you a week instead of a weekend:
1️⃣ Cut the opening in the bottom, not the top. The stem stays on, nothing caves in, and you just set the pumpkin down over the light.
2️⃣ Give it a bleach bath. Mix 1 tablespoon of bleach per quart of water. Soak the carved pumpkin for 20 minutes, then let it dry upside down. That kills mold spores before they spread.
3️⃣ Put petroleum jelly on every cut edge. Spread a thin layer on the exposed flesh, inside and out. Pumpkins shrivel because they lose moisture, so sealing the cuts keeps the face looking sharp.
☀️ And the one that beats all three: keep it out of the afternoon sun. If it sits on a west-facing lanai, nothing on this list will save it.
(Lanai direction matters for more than pumpkins, too)
Happy carving, Oahu! 🌺
