Our hearts are with our friends, neighbors, clients, and communities across Central Indiana who have been impacted by the recent severe storms and flooding.
For many families, the cleanup is just beginning; and figuring out what to do first can feel overwhelming. We wanted to share a few important steps and resources that may help. Please share this post so it can reach anyone who may need it.
First, report your damage:
Indiana uses these reports to understand the extent of storm damage and help determine what disaster recovery resources and assistance may be needed.
For counties and storm events currently activated through Indiana 211, residents can report damage by calling 211 or 866-211-9966, or by submitting a report through Indiana 211 online.
If your county or storm event is not currently listed through Indiana 211, contact your County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) directly.

Before you start cleaning up, document everything you safely can. Take plenty of photos and videos before removing damaged materials or throwing anything away. Be sure to document things like:
• Water lines and flooding levels
• Flooring, drywall and walls
• Furniture and appliances
• Personal belongings
• Structural and exterior damage
Keep receipts for cleanup supplies, temporary housing, repairs, equipment rentals, and other storm-related expenses. Once everything has been documented, begin safely drying and protecting the property as soon as possible to help prevent additional damage.

Know what disaster assistance may be available; but understand that assistance is not automatically guaranteed after every storm.

The Indiana State Disaster Relief Fund may provide assistance to eligible uninsured or underinsured homeowners following qualifying disasters involving their primary residence. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) provides updates regarding disaster declarations and available recovery resources.

FEMA Individual Assistance becomes available only if a Presidential disaster declaration includes your county. If approved, eligible homeowners and renters may be able to receive assistance for temporary housing, necessary home repairs, and certain personal property losses. FEMA can be reached at 1-800-621-3362.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) may also offer low-interest disaster loans to eligible homeowners and renters—not just businesses—to help cover qualifying property losses. Remember that SBA assistance is generally a loan that must be repaid, not a grant.

Most importantly, please take care of one another.

If you weren’t affected by the storms, check on your neighbors; particularly elderly residents, people with disabilities, and anyone who may need an extra set of hands.

If you know someone dealing with flooding or storm damage, please share this information with them. Knowing where to start, what to document, and who to contact can make a difficult situation a little easier to navigate.
