Homeowners! It is an important part of home ownership to know the location of your sewer line cleanout, if your house has one at all.

The aptly named "cleanout" is usually a 4 or 6 inch pipe with a square k**b on the end cap, typically white PVC (newer) or cast iron (older). Often found in a basement, crawlspace, or on the exterior of the house in a mulch bed or elsewhere around the perimeter.

Knowing the cleanout location means that if your drains ever back up, a plumber or inspector can get to the line fast instead of searching.

Just locate it. Don't open the cap unless you know what you're doing, since a backed-up line can spill out. If you can't find one at all, that's worth knowing too, because adding a proper cleanout makes any future inspection or cleaning much easier.

We all love those unique mid-century modern homes. But, like most homes built before the 1970's, they likely have two kinds of sewer pipe. Inside the house the line is typically cast iron, and the part running out to the street is typically clay tile.

Cast iron tends to corrode and scale on the inside, which narrows the pipe over time. Clay tile has joints that let roots in.

What helps: keep wipes (even the "flushable" ones), grease and oil out of the drain, and if you're buying an older home or it's been years since anyone looked, a camera inspection shows what shape each section is actually in.

Thinking about selling your house? Get ahead of the negotiation process with a pre-listing sewer scope.

A sewer problem discovered mid-contract can stall a deal or bring a last-minute repair demand. If you scope the line before you list, you can handle anything it shows on your own timeline, get your own quotes, and go to market with a clear report. And if the line looks good, that's a selling point.

Sellers and listing agents: it's an easy inspection that can remove one of the most common surprises.

This is a severe root intrusion into a clay a sewer line, as seen on our camera monitor.

Roots work their way into older clay tile joints looking for water. Light roots found early can often be managed with routine cleaning or a root-control product, with periodic monitoring. Roots left to grow like this one can eventually block the line entirely, causing sewage backups into the house.

If you have trees near your sewer line, get it scoped, even if you don't have symptoms such as slow or gurgling drains. If you detect roots early enough, they can be managed. If you wait, your sewer line could be beyond repair, requiring thousands of dollars of work.

This line runs from the home to the city main. We found moderate corrosion and some build-up, but overall it’s still functioning properly ✅

This is why a sewer scope is important—it reveals what’s happening inside your pipes before small issues quietly turn into expensive repairs.

💡 𝐓𝐢𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 💡

If your toilet bubbles when you run the sink or washing machine, don’t ignore it.

That’s not just air—it’s your plumbing system struggling to vent properly, often due to a partial blockage in the main sewer line.

👉 Most people wait for a backup.
This is the warning before that happens.

Catch it early, save yourself the mess.
