We crunched 10 years of numbers for a full-time homestead using about 8 kWh a day:
⛽ Gas generator: $58,733
☀️ Solar: about $19,500

For a weekend cabin, it's closer: $6,567 for gas vs about $3,000 for solar, with solar breaking even around year 5.
