One of my favorite things about old houses is how much attention was given to the details we barely think about today.
Door k***s, escutcheons, hinges, locksets and iron railings weren’t just functional—they were part of the design. Victorian-era hardware could pull inspiration from Gothic Revival, Eastlake, Renaissance Revival and other popular styles, with everything from geometric patterns and scrollwork to foliage and even faces worked into the metal.
The hinge pictured here appears to include a foliate face—possibly a Green Man motif—which is exactly the kind of small detail that makes exploring historic homes so much fun.
If you love old houses too, or you’re looking for one of your own, DM me. I’m always happy to talk historic homes, help you understand what you’re looking at, or help you find the right old house anywhere in Ohio or Kentucky.
