Major booking platforms are changing their fee structures, and those changes affect both vacation rental owners and the travelers who stay with them.

Airbnb’s single-fee model generally deducts 15.5% from the host’s payout. Vrbo’s new pay-per-booking structure carries a 12% commission for affected properties. These commissions can apply to cleaning fees, too.

Even when a platform fee moves from the guest’s checkout screen to the property’s payout, that cost still exists. As owners and management companies adjust to those expenses, travelers may see higher rental rates.

𝗚𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗢𝗥 𝗞𝗔𝗬 𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗬 𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗨𝗘𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗖𝗨𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has issued an executive proclamation declaring a mandatory evacuation for all non-residents, tourists, and visitors in Alabama coastal areas, effective immediately as of 2:30 p.m. CDT today, October 8, 2026, due to the threat of Hurricane Isaias.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀: All non-residents, visitors, and tourists.

𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀: All Baldwin County areas south of the Intracoastal Waterway, including the City of Gulf Shores and the City of Orange Beach.

𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: In effect until the state of emergency expires or is modified.

All visitors currently staying south of the Intracoastal Waterway, including the City of Gulf Shores and the City of Orange Beach, should make immediate preparations to safely evacuate the area.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM POOLE VACATION RENTALS

Regarding Hurricane-Related Cancellations and Refunds

At Poole Vacation Rentals, the safety and well-being of our guests, property owners, and community have always been a top priority.

We understand the concerns and frustrations surrounding the approaching hurricane, particularly for families who have planned and paid for vacations along our beautiful Gulf Coast.

However, we also believe it is important to provide some clarity regarding our cancellation and refund procedures.

When guests make a reservation with Poole Vacation Rentals, they agree to specific terms and conditions, including policies regarding cancellations, refunds, and severe weather events. These policies are established in advance and apply to all reservations.

As a vacation rental management company, we have a responsibility not only to our guests but also to the individual property owners we represent. We cannot simply disregard contractual agreements or make exceptions based on individual circumstances without following the proper procedures.

In the case of hurricanes, our policies require certain official evacuation orders to be issued before hurricane-related refunds can be authorized.

Until those requirements were met, our staff was obligated to follow the policies agreed upon at the time of booking.

We recognize that this may have been frustrating for some guests. However, following established procedures ensures that every guest is treated fairly and consistently, rather than making decisions based on who calls first, who expresses the greatest frustration, or who shares their concerns publicly.

We are pleased to share that, following the issuance of evacuation orders, we have already begun working with affected guests to reschedule or cancel reservations for this weekend and process applicable refunds.

Our team is actively addressing these reservations, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through them.

We understand that emotions can run high when severe weather threatens vacation plans, especially when families and financial commitments are involved. We respect those concerns.

At the same time, we ask for an understanding that following established policies does not mean a company lacks compassion or concern for its customers. It means we have a responsibility to handle difficult situations properly, consistently, and fairly for everyone involved.

Our staff members have been working diligently to assist guests while also preparing their own families and homes for the approaching storm. They deserve the same understanding and respect that we strive to extend to every guest.

We appreciate the many guests who have shown patience and understanding during this situation.

Our thoughts remain with everyone in the path of this storm, and we encourage everyone to follow the guidance of local emergency management officials.
