Our kitchen comes with a lobster pot, and in October most guests fill it with blue crabs instead.
Beacon Seafood is a few minutes up US-158 in Grandy, on the mainland side, so there's no bridge between our door and dinner. They steam crabs and shrimp to order, or you can buy them live and do the steaming yourself. Blue crab season on Currituck Sound runs through the end of the month, and the fall striped bass run is just getting started.
We set the kitchen up for that kind of meal. Granite counters, a full-size range and fridge, a dishwasher, and an island with four bar stools where people end up picking crab while the second batch cooks. The dining table seats six, which is the whole condo, and it sits by the windows that look out over the sound. There's a coffee maker and a blender too, so nobody has to pack small appliances.
One request for anyone who catches their own: clean fish and crabs at the dock, not in the kitchen sink. The cleaning station is a few steps from the pier for exactly that reason.
