You only get to see Canyon Lake like THIS once every 20 years! 👀🌵
If you’ve ever visited Canyon Lake, you know it for its beautiful blue water surrounded by towering canyon walls. But right now, it looks completely different!
Every 20 years, Canyon Lake undergoes a major drawdown so crews can inspect and maintain portions of the dams that are normally underwater.
And when I say drawdown, I mean they’ve lowered the lake by approximately 54 FEET! 🤯
The last time this happened was in 2007, making this a pretty rare opportunity to see a completely different side of one of Arizona’s most beautiful lakes.
Here’s the timeline:
📍 September 2026 - The drawdown began.
📍 October 2026 - Water levels reached approximately 54 feet below normal.
📍 Mid-December 2026 - Refilling is expected to begin.
📍 Mid-January 2027 - The lake is expected to return to normal and reopen.
If you’re in the East Valley, this is definitely something worth checking out while you can! The drive along Apache Trail is beautiful, and you can catch glimpses of the dramatically lowered lake from publicly accessible areas.
Just remember that the lake and shoreline are closed during the project, so enjoy the views from permitted areas!
Save this for a unique Arizona outing, and follow along for more East Valley hidden gems and local favorites!
