It’s easy to stop noticing the stairs you use every day. Take a moment to look for damaged steps, loose or broken handrails, and items left where someone could trip. Keep the steps clear, and have unsafe conditions evaluated and repaired by a qualified professional. Don’t lean on a questionable rail to test its strength.

A quick look is not a guarantee of safety. A home inspection evaluates readily visible and accessible components within its agreed scope; it does not uncover every concealed defect or predict future failure.

I’m Matthew Foley with PeakPoint Inspections. If you’d like a clearer picture of your home’s condition, I’d be happy to help with a professional inspection.

Those TEST and RESET buttons on a GFCI outlet deserve a place on your monthly checklist.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to test and reset the device. Testing interrupts power to the outlets it protects, so plan around connected equipment first. If it fails to trip or reset as instructed, stop using the affected outlet and have a qualified electrician evaluate it. Don’t remove covers or attempt wiring repairs.

A successful button test does not prove that every part of the electrical system is safe. A home inspection evaluates readily visible and accessible components within its agreed scope, not every concealed condition.

When did you last test your smoke alarms?

Use each alarm’s test button every month and follow its manufacturer’s instructions for testing, cleaning and replacement. If an alarm fails its test, address it promptly. Have a qualified electrician handle hardwired installation or wiring concerns.

A home inspection is not a fire-safety certification or a guarantee of future performance. Under the NCHILB Standards of Practice, the smoke-alarm check covers readily accessible alarms and their test function, with an exception for alarms that are part of a central alarm system.

When did you last look under your kitchen or bathroom sink?

Take a quick look at the exposed plumbing and cabinet bottom. Drips at connections, puddles or new water spots are worth attention. Have an active leak evaluated promptly by a qualified plumber rather than just drying it up and forgetting it.

A dry cabinet during a quick check doesn't rule out a concealed or intermittent leak.

Feel a draft when you walk past your front door?

With the door closed, look for daylight around the edges and worn or missing weatherstripping. A loose-fitting door or visible gaps can be clues that outside air is getting in. They’re worth a closer look rather than simply turning up the heat.

After the next rain, take a look around your home once it’s safe to head outside.

Are puddles collecting beside the foundation? Does the ground slope toward the house instead of away from it? Those are useful clues to note. Water should drain away from the foundation, and recurring pooling deserves a closer look.

I’m Matthew Foley with PeakPoint Inspections. A professional home inspection can help you understand visible drainage concerns and whether further evaluation is needed.

A water stain is worth a closer look, not just a fresh coat of paint.

Keep an eye out for new stains on walls or ceilings, damp areas, or a musty smell. If something changes, have the moisture source evaluated before covering it up.

Want a clearer picture of your home’s condition? A professional home inspection can help you understand visible concerns and where further evaluation may be needed.
