The main pool at the Fort Worth Water Gardens was designed to hold three feet of water. It ended up nine feet deep, and not for anybody's sake. The pumps would not run right at three.

Philip Johnson and John Burgee designed it, and the Amon G. Carter Foundation gave it to the city in 1974. The Active Pool drops thirty eight feet of water down stepped terraces of stone, and the stairs run right down into the middle of it. In July 1975 a film crew shot scenes for Logan's Run in that pool.

On 16 June 2004 a group from Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago came to the Water Gardens because the pool at their hotel was closed. Two girls went into the water, Lauren Dukes, who was eight, and Juantrice Deadmon, who was eleven. Christopher Dukes, who was thirteen, went in after them. Their father, Myron Dukes, went in after the children. All four of them drowned. Fort Worth Fire Lieutenant Kent Worley said a pump at the bottom "apparently created a suction".

The Water Gardens sat closed for most of three years. It reopened on 4 March 2007 with the main pool cut from nine feet down to two, and wading and swimming are prohibited now. The water still comes off those terraces the same way it did in 1974, thirty eight feet of it, and the stairs still go down into the middle. What the city asks of anybody standing there now is only that they look at it.
