My oldest boy, Leo, is playing on the 7/8 football team & my youngest, Eli, is playing on the 5/6 team. So naturally I’m coaching both 😂 This is my third year coaching and I gotta say it’s a lot of work, a lot of fun, and really humbling sometimes.

Some days our biggest “win” is getting a team picture with everyone smiling!
Some days I feel like I’ve got this whole dad thing & coach thing under control. And other days, it lands me right on my butt. Literally (see the picture as evidence).

But I think sports are a great way to teach your kids great life lessons.

Obviously they learn some skill and coordination, too. But, more than anything, I want my kids to understand the values that go hand in hand with team sports.
I want them to know the importance of finishing what you start.

I don’t want to raise quitters. It doesn’t mean you have to love football for the rest of your life, but it does mean that if you signed up to be on the team, you show up for your team & finish the season.

I want them to be good teammates.

To learn how to work with other kids, play with other kids, and help your team pull off the play or get the touchdown. You probably won’t love everyone you end up working with in life, but knowing how to work together is a good skill to have.

And I want to help them win. Life is hard. And that makes wins along the way even better.

Sure, there are more important things than the score at the end of the game. But it’s really fun to win, too. To work hard, play hard, and celebrate a win is a core memory for a kid.

I’m just glad I get to be a small part of that.
