Great places bring people together, and Downtown Fargo is building on that idea.

The future Fargo Convention Center will connect visitors to the heart of downtown, with nearly 40 restaurants, coffee shops, and bars, along with more than 20 retail businesses, located within a five-minute walk (approximately a quarter mile) of the site.

From grabbing coffee between meetings to exploring local shops after an event, the convention center will create new opportunities for visitors to experience Downtown Fargo while supporting the businesses that make our community unique.

We're excited to see the vision come to life!

Fall has a way of bringing out the best in Downtown Fargo. Walkable streets, changing colors, local businesses and the everyday activity that makes downtown feel like a neighborhood.

A little history, a lot of character. Standing along Broadway since 1931, the Black Building is one of downtown Fargo's most recognizable architectural landmarks.

Originally home to Sears, WDAY Studios, and Elm Tree Square, the eight-story building once held the title of North Dakota's tallest building. Its Indiana limestone façade, intricate metalwork, and Art Deco-inspired details reflect nearly a century of history.

In 2019, a major historic renovation happened, preserving original features while bringing new life to this downtown landmark.

A reminder that thoughtful development isn't always about building something new. Sometimes, it's about preserving what makes a place special.

What makes a street more than just a way to get somewhere? In 2018, Strong Towns explored the different paths of two familiar downtown Fargo streets: Broadway and Main Avenue. While both once shared similar characteristics, their evolution highlighted how street design can influence walkability, local businesses, and the way people experience a neighborhood. It's an important reminder that thoughtful urban design goes beyond individual buildings. It's about creating places that connect people and strengthen communities.

Downtown Fargo is home to about 95 restaurants, bars and coffee shops. You can walk to an average of eight of them in just five minutes. That mix of dining, walkability and activity is part of what makes a strong downtown, giving people more reasons to stay, explore and keep moving from one local business to the next.

85 surface parking spaces → a mixed-use block built for living, working, shopping and connecting. Before Mercantile, this corner of Broadway was largely dedicated to surface parking. Today, it includes 100 apartment homes, 367 public parking spaces, ground-floor retail and more. It’s a transformation that goes beyond one building - bringing more people, activity and opportunity to the heart of Downtown Fargo.

Story Behind the Name | The Landing

The Landing’s name is rooted in the history of its site along Downtown Fargo’s rail corridor. Before the building stood at 1001 NP Avenue, the area was home to a planing mill connected to a Northern Pacific rail spur.

That railroad history helped inspire the name The Landing - a nod to movement, connection and a sense of arrival in Downtown Fargo.

It’s not just one building, one business or one project. It’s the way housing, local businesses, public spaces, parking, walkability, art and events all work together to create a place people actually want to spend time in.

That mix is what gives Downtown Fargo its energy - and what keeps it growing.
