Selling your house? Buyers experience your home with ALL their senses. Don't forget about their noses!
Don't let unwanted odors turn buyers off! 6 tips for a fresher-smelling home:
1. WATCH WHAT'S COOKING
Avoid especially fragrant foods right before showings.
Use your range hood.
Open windows when weather permits.
Clean greasy surfaces.
Empty the kitchen trash.
2. LOVE YOUR PETS. LOSE THE ODORS.
🐾 Before showings:
Wash pet beds and blankets.
Vacuum carpets and furniture.
Clean litter boxes.
Put away food bowls and toys.
Take pets with you when possible.
Bonus tip: Removable furniture covers make last-minute prep easier!
3. DON'T IGNORE THAT MUSTY SMELL
🏠 A closed-up home can get stale, but persistent mustiness may signal a moisture problem.
Get fresh air circulating.
Run bathroom exhaust fans.
Check for leaks and excess moisture.
Investigate suspected mold with a qualified professional.
Don't just mask it. Find the source.
4. CIGARETTE SMOKE LINGERS LONG AFTER YOU DO
🚭 Smoke residue can cling to walls, floors, carpets, and furniture.
Don't smoke in or right next to the house.
Deep-clean affected surfaces and fabrics.
Replace HVAC filters (this helps with the other odors, too!).
Consider odor-blocking primer and repainting if necessary.
Air freshener won't remove smoke residue!
5. SKIP THE HEAVY SCENTS
🕯️ Strong candles and air fresheners can make buyers wonder what you're covering up.
Plus, strong fragrances can bother scent-sensitive buyers.
Aim for clean and neutral — not heavily perfumed.
And never leave a burning candle unattended!
6. THINK TWICE BEFORE USING OZONE
Ozone generators are sometimes marketed for tough odors, but ozone can irritate the lungs and harm people and pets.
They aren't a routine DIY solution.
For persistent odors, address the source and consult a qualified professional.
LET BUYERS NOTICE YOUR HOME — NOT ITS SMELL.
A fresh, clean-smelling home helps buyers focus on what matters. Remember, your goal is not a fragrance - it's a clean, neutral smell!
