Marshall Square Park is the oldest public park in West Chester. But the houses around it are the ones people picture when they say they want to live in the borough.
The borough bought the land in 1841 because it’s the highest point in town and they needed a reservoir. It was dedicated as a square in 1848 and named for Humphry Marshall, the botanist Marshallton is named after. In 1878 it became a park, laid out as a small arboretum by nurseryman Joshua Hoopes and modeled on Washington Square in Philadelphia. The Civil War monument to the 97th Regiment went up in 1887 right where the water basin used to be.
In 1889, 3 residents went to Philadelphia and bought a 12 foot cast iron fountain for about $170. 5 scalloped basins and a metal basket on top holding a ball that the water keeps moving. It was the center of the park for 60 years.
Then in the early 1950s the borough pulled it out. The pieces ended up on a farm in East Bradford, sitting in private hands for the next 6 decades while the park went without. Friends of Marshall Square Park tracked the sections down, restored it, and put it back in 2016. The ball is moving again.
Parks like this are what really gave West Chester character. People are driven to move somewhere around here for the beauty that it offers.
Which house on the square would you pick?
