October 1st means it’s officially time to start making your North County fall plans. 🍂

There is SO much happening around San Diego this month — from pumpkin patches and apple picking to fall festivals, family-friendly events, seasonal markets, and some exciting new businesses and restaurants worth checking out.

A few places to put on your October list:

🎃 Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center — pumpkins, hayrides, a straw maze, petting zoo, pony rides and plenty of classic fall fun. Their pumpkin patch runs through October 31.

🍎 Julian Farm & Orchard — a perfect fall day trip for pumpkin picking, U-Pick apples, Harvest Fest, farm activities and all the Julian charm.

🎃 Oma’s Pumpkin Patch in Lakeside and the Goff Family Pumpkin Patch at Liberty Station are two more fun options if you’re looking to switch up your usual fall tradition.

And if you’re more interested in discovering what’s new around town, North County has had some great new restaurants, cafés and local businesses pop up this year — so October is the perfect excuse to explore somewhere you haven’t tried yet.

The Sessions Surf Festival is bringing surfing, music, film, and art together across Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Carlsbad — and it feels like such a natural reflection of what makes this part of San Diego so unique.

It’s not just about being close to the ocean. It’s the creative energy, the people, the places, and the way a regular week can turn into something worth remembering.

Some places become part of the fabric of a community.

When Captain Keno’s closed its doors in 2024 after 54 years in Encinitas, it marked the end of an era. But pieces of that history didn’t disappear - they found a new home at Breakers.

The red leather booths, tables, bar stools, dishes and other familiar pieces from Keno’s now live alongside a new generation of memories. And what I love most is seeing how people continue to contribute to that nostalgia, bringing in vintage pieces and local treasures that make Breakers feel connected to the Encinitas we remember.

It’s a reminder that the character of a neighborhood isn’t always found in what’s brand new. Sometimes, it’s in the pieces we choose to preserve, and the stories we continue to add to them.

That’s the beauty of North County. The places change, but the memories have a way of finding their way home.
