🎃👻 What a BOO-tiful time downtown! Another year participating in the Great Pumpkin Walk!

Our Newman Lofts residents had a blast handing out candy to all the little trick-or-treaters in downtown East Lansing yesterday! We love being part of this wonderful community tradition and making Halloween a little sweeter for everyone. 🧡🎃

We were pleased to welcome students from MSU’s Landscape Architecture class to Newman Lofts today!

As part of their studies on green roof design and sustainability, the students visited our green roof to observe the space firsthand. Their visit included sketching and documenting the landscape, learning about the structure and design of the roof, and discussing both its unique features and the challenges involved in maintaining a green roof in an active living community.

We’re proud that our community can serve as a place for learning, exploration, and connection, while showcasing innovative approaches to incorporating green space into an urban environment.

Thank you to the MSU students for visiting Newman Lofts and taking such a thoughtful interest in our green roof! 🌱

Did you know? Newman Lofts has a special connection to East Lansing’s history! 💚
The Story Behind Newman: The beautiful green-and-white brick home where Hillcrest meets Oakhill Avenue was built in 1908 by Professor Chase Newman, who taught drafting and design at Michigan State College (now MSU).
Professor Newman was more than a professor - he helped develop East Lansing’s first street numbering system, drew some of the city’s earliest maps, served on the first City Council, and was one of the city’s first historians.
One of the most meaningful parts of his story? He rented a room in his home to Myrtle Craig, who went on to become the first African American to graduate from Michigan State University. 🎓
With more than a century of history, the Newman name continues to be part of the East Lansing community we’re proud to call home.

Our residents enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of beautiful music yesterday as Ricky Nalett filled the Lofts with his incredible piano playing! 🎹

Thank you, Ricky, for sharing your talent and making our community a little brighter through music.

We’re already looking forward to welcoming him back during the Holiday season for another memorable “Live at the Lofts” performance! 🎄
