Mornings around Durham have gone soft and quiet this week, with hoodies at the school bus stop, the first cup of coffee held a little longer for the warmth, and the porch thermometer reading somewhere around fifty. By midafternoon it's back near seventy, and the canopy over Forest Hills Park is still as green as midsummer, holding on like nobody told it yet.

For now, fall has the mornings and summer still has the afternoons.

Inventory climbed to its highest point since 2019, and months of supply reached 4.8, close to what's considered a balanced market. Jean's By The Sea brings the North Carolina coast to Old West Durham, settling into the A-frame on Hicks Street that Durham knew for 32 years as Wimpy's Grill. Owner Kate Elia spent about two decades in the w**e business, including four years as general manager of W**e Authorities, before opening this casual seafood shack this past spring. She named it for her mother, Jean, and built it as a come-as-you-are place to eat well.

The menu reads like a trip across the state. Calabash-style fried shrimp baskets arrive with hush puppies, raw N.C. oysters and peel-and-eat shrimp keep things close to the shore, and the crispy cod sandwich reaches all the way to the mountains for its Appalachian hoop cheese. Inside, six booths and a counter sit among vintage signs, fishing poles, and a four-foot flounder mural by the door.

Out back, a patio seats more than 100 under a pergola and shade trees, and on Friday and Saturday evenings the backyard bar, The Barj, serves buckets of b**r, slushies, and cocktails. Whether you're grabbing a shrimp basket at the counter for lunch or settling onto the patio for a Saturday night, Jean's is the closest beach in Durham.

Bull City BOOs Fest

The MAKRS Society's fifth annual BOOs Fest takes over Durham Central Park this Saturday with fire performers, jugglers, stilt walkers, tarot readers, lasers, and fog, plus a live DJ, local breweries, food trucks, and costume contests to carry things into the night. Younger witches and wizards get their own Harry Potter-themed kids' zone from Joy Worthy Co., with crafts, characters, and face painting.

Whether your costume has been planned since August, you're bringing little ones in their first Halloween getup, or you're just there for the fire show and a local b**r, there's a corner of the park for you. Come dressed up. The fog will be waiting.
