Fun Friday fact!

If you woke up angry about last night’s April snow, take heart that on this day, April 6th,1886 the heaviest snowfall in Detroit history blanketed the city in 24.5 inches.

(This photo was misslisted. Thanks to all those who showed us the correct listing. You're awesome history helpers. The correct location is Iron Street in Negaunee, Michigan (Upper Pensinsula) in 1899 on other sites. This is one snowy photo which we’ll need to track down more.)

As Detroit morphs from the “Motor City” to “Comeback Town,” a new retail landscape is beginning to take shape there as well. “Detroit was once the center of shopping, but that began to die 40 years ago,” Ken Nisch, chairman of retail-design firm JGA said. “We fell hard and for a long time. Now, we are seeing a vibrant urban shopping scene emerge.”

Heard about Detroit’s co-working space, Bamboo Detroit? It recently received a national honor as a top co-work space and local honors from the City of Detroit Government. “A lot of people ask about our name so thought we’d share a bit on that too. The name Bamboo comes from the plant. The bamboo plant is one of the fastest and strongest growing plants, but takes a few years to sprout from a seedling. We thought this was a good metaphor for new growing businesses. Plus, our model is flexible and designed to support your growth.”

"We are seeing a big movement of retirees and empty nesters moving back to the city because they no longer have an obligation to their kids," said Sabra Sanzotta, owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices - The Loft Warehouse in Detroit.

"Maddalena is among a growing number of boomers who are trading their suburban homes for smaller apartments in city centers across the country. Gone are the days when the golden years meant playing bridge in Boca Raton. Instead, these boomers are moving into neighborhoods that have been revitalized with a different demographic in mind: millennials."
