I recently sat down with Patrick Barone, founder of the Barone Defense Firm and one of the country’s leading authorities on DUI defense.

Patrick has built his reputation through deep specialization, writing more than 130 articles, teaching other lawyers, speaking, and authoring "Defending Drinking Drivers" for James Publishing.

He’s also experimenting aggressively with AI—and he’s refreshingly honest about where it works and where it falls short.

We discuss:

💡 Why becoming a genuine expert may be your best marketing investment

🤖 How Patrick uses different AI tools for research, writing, and training

🧠 How attorneys can use AI to improve their skills—not replace their thinking

☎️ Why his firm removed an AI intake agent after investing heavily in it

📈 Why generating more leads isn’t always the answer

This is a practical, candid conversation for attorneys looking to build their authority, use AI more intelligently, and create a stronger firm.

We recently sat down with paid media specialist Fransisco Wiles to talk about what’s actually working right now in law firm Meta advertising. 🎥

We covered why so many firms struggle with Facebook and Instagram ads, why the first few seconds of a video matter so much, and why authentic, attorney-led content often beats polished “lawyer commercial” style ads.

Fransisco also shared some incredibly practical insights on intake follow-up, signed-case tracking, CRM feedback loops, and how firms can stop optimizing for cheap leads and start focusing on better cases. 📈

If your firm is running Meta ads — or thinking about it — this conversation is full of takeaways you can use.

A few things from our conversation with Fransisco Wiles have stuck with us.

Meta ads for law firms usually don’t fail because “Facebook doesn’t work.”

More often, the issue is what happens around the ad:

The opening seconds.
The creative.
The follow-up.
The tracking. 📲

Fransisco made a point every firm running paid social should hear:

Your first 3–5 seconds need to earn attention.
Your ads don’t need to feel like polished commercials.
Your intake team needs to move quickly and follow up more than once.
And your real metric isn’t cost per lead — it’s cost per signed case.

What stood out most is how connected it all is.

A better hook can lower costs.
A stronger intake system can keep good leads from disappearing.
And better data can show which ads are actually producing cases. 📈

There’s a lot more in the full conversation, especially for firms that have tried Meta ads before and felt like the leads weren’t worth it.

One of the most practical takeaways from my interview with Fransisco Wiles was how much follow-up Meta leads often require. 📲

Fransisco shared that some of the best-performing firms follow up with Meta leads 15 times in 5 days using calls, texts, and emails.

That’s a very different intake rhythm than many firms are used to with referrals or Google leads.

We talked about why firms sometimes write off Meta leads as “junk,” when the real issue may be that the follow-up process isn’t fast, persistent, or coordinated enough. ⚖️

Fransisco also shared what top-performing firms are doing differently with creative, signed-case tracking, CRM feedback loops, and intake systems.

Something I hear often from attorneys:

“I’m getting leads, but they’re not the right ones.”

Joel solved that differently.

Instead of chasing more leads, he educated them first.

Now many of his clients:
✅ Read his book
✅ Understand the process
✅ Come in ready to hire

That shift—from convincing to advising—is what really stood out to me in this interview.

Responsiveness is everything.

The fastest way to improve your lead conversion is simple:
✅ automatic text response
✅ automatic email response
✅ scheduling link included

It works because it captures the lead while their interest is high — and instantly sets you apart from firms that take hours (or days) to reply.

Many law firms assume better cases come from bigger ad budgets.

In reality, results usually come from how the campaign is structured.

Serious injury campaigns tend to perform well on Meta when three things work together:

• Clear, educational messaging
• Thoughtful qualification before intake
• Immediate follow-up while interest is high

High-severity cases naturally create urgency. When messaging is calm and direct—and the intake process quickly identifies strong cases—the efficiency of the campaign changes dramatically.

Before increasing ad spend, evaluate the structure behind the campaign: clarity, screening, and response speed often determine the quality of cases more than budget alone.

Save this for future campaign planning, share it with a colleague who runs ads for law firms, and follow for more breakdowns on what’s working in legal marketing. 📌

You paid for the lead.
They reached out.
And then… crickets. 🦗

If your follow-up system is inconsistent, you’re bleeding cases every day — even when your marketing is “working.”

I break down a simple semi-automated follow-up system that keeps you top of mind and converts more leads into paying clients.

Most legal ads fail for a simple reason: they talk about the firm instead of the situation.

People scroll for clarity, not credentials. The firms seeing consistent results on Meta teach something small and useful—what happens next, what matters most, and what to avoid.

Education builds familiarity. Familiarity builds trust. Trust drives inquiries.

Save this before launching your next campaign.
