Winter is a natural time of year to reflect on the past and turn your eyes toward the future. For homeowners, that often involves taking stock of whether your current mortgage rate makes sense for your current situation.

It's easy to assume you’re stuck with the rate you locked in years ago, but that isn't always the case. Rates have shifted considerably since the late 2010s and early 2020s. Additionally, it’s possible that your financial situation has shifted as well.

So, if your credit has improved since you first purchased, if your home has built more equity than you might expect, or if primary mortgage insurance (PMI) is still part of your payment when it may no longer be necessary, it's worth taking a few minutes this season to see where you stand. On November 1st, daylight saving time ends, and the clocks fall back an hour. This shift not only gives us an extra hour of much-needed sleep but also serves as a timely reminder to take care of a few things around the house as we approach winter.

So, that said, here is a quick home checklist worth running through as the days get shorter:

✅Turn back any clocks that do not automatically adjust themselves before bed on Saturday night.

✅Test and replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. This is one of the easiest ways to keep your household safe heading into winter.

✅Check your outdoor and security lighting. As daylight hours get shorter, having well-lit outdoor spaces can be a key safety step.

Taking care of these small to-do list items can make a real difference in how safe and prepared your home feels all season long.
