🧮 The budget line most homeowners forget: surprises.

Especially in older homes, add a 10–20% contingency on top of your project cost. Then borrow the project cost plus that contingency — and nothing more.

A few more numbers worth knowing: 📌 About 47% of homeowners finance their renovations 📌 Roughly 33% borrow $10,000 or more 📌 Consider the return on your investment before you commit

Planning a winter project? 🍂 Fall is the perfect time to scope it, price it and line up funding so you're ready to go.

Wickham's Workbench serves 17+ Colorado locations — including Black Forest, Castle Rock, Fountain, Littleton, Monument and Woodland Park.

📊 Thinking about a remodel but not sure how to fund it? Here's the 2026 lay of the land:

🏠 Home equity loan — fixed lump sum · 6.5–9% · best for defined projects with firm quotes

🔄 HELOC — variable-rate draw line · 7.5–9% · best for phased or multi-year work (average limit ~$30,000)

🏦 Cash-out refinance — replaces your whole mortgage · 6.5–8.5% · makes sense mainly if it also improves your rate

💳 Personal loan — no equity needed, funds fast · 8–15% (good credit) · fits smaller projects

🧾 Contractor financing — convenient, but read the terms: promo rates can rise after the intro period

📈 Credit tip: mid-600s is the usual minimum; the best rates go above 740.

Have a firm scope and a real quote before you talk to a lender — that's where we come in. 📞 (719) 632-5117

☀️ A basement bedroom doesn't have to feel like a cave.

When you add an egress window, the style matters:

🔹 Casement — the whole sash swings out on a crank. Most clear opening (needs swing room in the well).
🔹 Slider — one sash slides sideways. Needs a wider unit.
🔹 Single / double-hung — one sash slides up. Needs a taller unit, which is tough on short basement walls.

Cost depends on your home: new vs. enlarged opening, wall type, dig depth, structural work, well size, window style, drainage and interior finish. We'll walk you through all of it — no guessing.

🪟 Ever wondered what it takes to cut a window into a basement wall? Here are the 7 stages:

1️⃣ Layout and marking
2️⃣ Excavation below the planned sill
3️⃣ Cutting the foundation — with dust control
4️⃣ Framing, with a buck and lintel where needed
5️⃣ Installing the window with flashing and low-expansion foam
6️⃣ Window well, gravel, drainage and backfill
7️⃣ Interior finish and trim

🏛️ In Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department issues the permits and does the inspections — it also covers El Paso County, Fountain, Woodland Park, Manitou Springs, Monument and Palmer Lake.

🧽 The faucet-care routine that actually works:

✅ Mild dish soap
✅ Warm water
✅ A soft cloth
✅ A dry towel to finish — this is what keeps minerals from settling

🚫 Scouring pads 🚫 Bleach 🚫 Ammonia 🚫 Acidic or gritty cleaners

Always check the manufacturer's care sheet before trying specialty products. 📄

Holiday guests will be using that powder room soon 🦃 — if your fixtures are past saving, we can help you upgrade.

🚰 Your faucet finish says a lot about how much you'll be cleaning. 👀

Quick cheat sheet:

✨ Brushed nickel — hides spots and prints. Low cleaning effort. Best for most households.
🪞 Polished chrome — classic, rarely dates… but shows spots and prints readily (wipes clean fast).
🖤 Matte black — hides prints, shows mineral spots. Needs gentle products; the look may date sooner.
🟡 Brass — hides prints fairly well. Unlacquered brass darkens over time.
🟤 Oil-rubbed bronze — hides spots well. Traditional, with a patina that shifts.

💡 Pro tip: match your shower valve, faucet and accessories in the same finish and brand — and allow just one contrast piece, like lighting or a mirror frame.

💰 Wondering why bathroom addition quotes vary so much?

Here's what moves the number — ranked from biggest impact down:

1️⃣ Distance to existing drain and vent lines
2️⃣ Structural changes required
3️⃣ Electrical and plumbing work
4️⃣ Permits and inspections
5️⃣ Fixtures, tile and finish selections

Surprised tile is last? In most bathroom additions, the plumbing rough-in is the most expensive part of the job. Drains need proper slope, and every fixture needs venting.

⏳ Timeline: several weeks to a few months, depending on scope and permits. Permits are required — this work touches plumbing, electrical, mechanical and sometimes structure.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗱𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 🏠

🏠 Same bathroom. Four very different price tags.

Where you put a new bathroom decides how hard (and how pricey) the job gets:

✅ Converted interior space — easiest plumbing when it's beside or above an existing bathroom or kitchen
⛏️ Basement bathroom — may need concrete trenching, plus a pump system if it sits below the sewer line
🧱 Bump-out addition — needs foundation, framing, roof and exterior work
🏗️ Pop-top / second story — the biggest structural job; drains and vents route through finished rooms

Overall, bathroom additions in Colorado Springs typically land between $25,000 and $75,000+. And the #1 cost driver? Distance to your existing drain and vent lines — so location matters.

With the cold months ahead, it's a great time to plan an indoor project. 🍂

🚿 The best aging-in-place remodels don't look "accessible." They just look good.

That's universal design — features that work for a 30-year-old and an 80-year-old, and keep their resale appeal for everyone in between.

The upgrades we prioritize:

1️⃣ Curbless (roll-in) shower
2️⃣ Grab bars
3️⃣ Comfort-height toilet
4️⃣ No-step entry
5️⃣ Single-level living — main-floor bedroom and bath
6️⃣ Wider doorways (32–36 inches)
7️⃣ Lever handles and better lighting

Colorado Springs homes are full of split-levels and multi-story layouts, which is exactly why a no-step entry matters so much here — especially once the ice arrives. 🧊

Structural, electrical or plumbing changes need Pikes Peak Regional Building Department permits. We handle that part.

🏡 77% of adults 50+ want to age in place. Almost none of them know what it costs. Here it is:

🔩 Grab bars, installed → $100–$350 each
💡 Lever handles / lighting → $200–$2,000
🚪 No-step entry ramp → $1,500–$4,000
🪜 Stair lift → $2,500–$8,000 (curved: $7,500–$15,000+)
🚿 Curbless walk-in shower → $6,000–$12,000
🛁 Full accessible bathroom → $8,000–$25,000
🏠 Whole-home retrofit → $18,000–$75,000

Most projects land between $3,000 and $25,000 — and the average accessibility retrofit is about $4,500.

Why now? 1 in 4 adults 65+ falls each year, and most falls happen at home — usually in the bathroom. Winter doesn't make that easier. ❄️
