They sound alike, but they protect against different things. Swipe through the basics:

Home insurance covers sudden damage from covered events, like fire, wind or hail, and theft, plus liability. It usually doesn't cover normal wear and tear, and flood damage typically needs a separate policy. Lenders typically require it on a financed purchase.

A home warranty is an optional service contract that covers repair or replacement of listed systems and appliances when they break down from normal wear and tear. It doesn't cover damage from events like fire or storms, and many warranties exclude pre-existing conditions and have coverage limits.

What you pay: Insurance has a premium and a deductible. A warranty has an annual fee, plus a service fee each time you call for a repair.

In a Texas purchase, the buyer chooses the warranty provider, and the contract can have the seller reimburse the cost up to an agreed amount.

We're not insurance or warranty providers, so read the fine print on both and ask each provider what's covered, what's excluded, and what you'd pay. Neither one replaces a home inspection.
