The Story Behind Burton
Long before Lake Burton became a gathering place for generations of families, a small mountain town flourished along the Tallulah River.
In the mid-to-late 1800s, Jeremiah Burton—our developer’s cousin—owned 1,000 acres along the river, where he opened the area’s first store and post office and built the first bridge across the Tallulah. The town took root at the confluence of Dick’s Creek and the river, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire Burton’s new mountain village today.
At our boathouse, historic photographs—including images of Jeremiah’s son John and his family shared here —along with a painting of the original town by Mary Poss, offer a glimpse into the lives and landscape of Burton’s past.
We’re proud to honor this history as we build for the future.
