Twenty-five years ago today America changed forever.
In the new Band of Brothers: Legacy documentary, Frank John Hughes, who portrayed WWII veteran βWild Billβ Guarnere, recalls a phone conversation he had with Bill himself shortly after the September 11 attacks, which came just two days after the series originally premiered.
The question that came up: Would another generation of young Americans step forward with the same strength and resolve to protect our freedoms when the country needed them, just as Bill, the men of Easy Company, and countless other men and women serving at home and abroad had during WWII?
Bill believed they already were - they just weren't wearing military fatigues.
They were the firefighters, police officers, paramedics and other first responders running toward danger on 9/11 while others fled. And in the years that followed, another generation would again answer the call to serve at home and overseas without hesitation.
Today we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, those who ran toward danger, and all who answered the call to serve as a result, then and now.
We remember, we honor, and we will never forget.
