Today is Word of the Day and the word(s) is “newel post lamp!” Any good Victorian-era house will have a lamp on its newel post.

Thank you to the Heurich House Museum for letting me showcase their newel post lamp. It’s a prime example!

Happy Throwback Thursday!

Clinker bricks are a personal favorite architectural feature of mine. I love how much character they add to a building. Each clinker is unique which makes them that much more interesting - they’re like the snowflakes of bricks! 🧱

The Heurich House Museum was built in the gilded age for one of Washington, DC’s most successful businessmen, Christian Heurich!

Heurich operated a brewing company that was the city’s second largest employer. You can still taste the original recipe by ordering a Senate B**r in the biergarten! 🍻

The Heurich House Museum offers tours of the historic house and a newly added Preservation Tour where you get to go behind the scenes and learn about what goes into preserving a historic house like this! 🏡

This room was too precious to be demolished so it was disassembled and rebuilt in a museum!

The V&A Dundee has so many incredible exhibits and artifacts but the Mackintosh Oak Tea Room was my favorite!

Who else has visited this museum before? Did you notice the difference in architecture?

Here are some more fun facts about the National Museum of Scotland:

* Prince Albert laid the cornerstone in 1861, which was his last public appearance before his death.
* The museum was originally designed with a ventilation system specifically to accommodate gas lighting.
* The Engineer, Francis Fowke, also designed Royal Albert Hall

DC’S TAFT BRIDGE 🌁👷‍♂️🚗🏛️

Did you know the largest free-standing concrete bridge in the world…is right here in the nation’s capital?

In today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” I’m looking into the the fascinating history of DC’s Taft Bridge—alongside friend of the show (DC’s best-dressed realtor and history buff) Joe Himali

You’ve probably walked or driven on/by the quarter mile stretch of Connecticut Avenue that connects to Woodley Park and Kalorama in Northwest.

But I bet you haven’t taken an off-the-beaten-path walk through a little-known path in the woods to see the underbelly of this engineering marvel. As I found out when I reached the end of my hike with Joe…there’s a lot more history here than meets the eye.

Throwback Thursday and Word of the Day all in one! Aren’t you a lucky bunch 😂.

This week’s TBT WOTD is “Caryatid”. Have you seen these anywhere else? 🤔

The caryatids in this video are at the National Park Seminary, a former women’s finishing school in Silver Spring, MD. The complex, which is now condominiums, was originally a resort and was also once a military medical facility.
