Before the malls took over, a trip downtown to shop was a real occasion, and Gimbels was one of the big stops. 🛍️

Gimbels came to Pittsburgh in the 1920s, taking over the Kaufmann and Baer store at Smithfield Street and Sixth Avenue. For decades it stood among the great downtown department stores, just a short walk from its rival Kaufmann's.

Shoppers dressed up for the trip, browsed floor after floor of clothing and housewares, and stopped to admire the decorated windows when the holidays rolled around. The store closed in the 1980s, but plenty of Pittsburghers still remember those busy aisles. 🎄
