On September 30, 1685, the sheriff of Calvert County handed a woman over to the sheriff of St. Mary’s County, at what was then Maryland’s capital.

Her name was Rebecca Fowler, the wife of a Calvert County planter. She was charged with using witchcraft on a laborer named Francis Sandsbury and several others at Mount Calvert, on the Patuxent River, leaving them “consumed, pined & lamed.”

What did she actually do? The surviving record never says. There’s no spell or curse described, and no witness account.
Those words come almost straight from England’s witchcraft law, which made it a hanging crime to leave someone “wasted, consumed, pined or lamed.” Sandsbury was likely sick or injured, and the court held her responsible.

She pleaded not guilty. On October 2, a jury found that she had done what the indictment described, but left it to the judges to decide whether that counted as witchcraft. The next day, the court sentenced her to hang. The record notes the sentence was carried out on October 9.

Rebecca Fowler is the only person known to have been executed for witchcraft by a Maryland court. It happened seven years before Salem, in a colony that never saw trials on Salem’s scale.

For more than a century, the book holding her trial record was thought to be lost. It turned up in the 1930s among the Court of Appeals records.

The land named in her indictment is still there. Mount Calvert is now a public park on the Patuxent in Prince George’s County, and you can walk down to the river.

5 YEARS OF TAG TEAM SOLUTIONS!

Five years ago, I took a chance on myself, left my job of over 10+ years at PAX River, and started TAG Team Solutions. I had no idea where this journey would take me, but I knew I wanted to build something I could be proud of and give back to the community along the way.

What started as nothing more than a name and an idea has grown into more than I ever imagined. To go from starting a business from scratch to becoming what we're proud to call Southern Maryland's #1 crawlspace encapsulation and waterproofing company is something I'll never take for granted.

To our customers, referral partners, friends, and family , THANK YOU! Every referral, recommendation, kind word, and opportunity you've given us has helped make this possible. We truly wouldn't be where we are today without you.

To our hardworking team, thank you for the long hours, dedication, and pride you put into your work every day. I couldn't do this without you.

Looking back on these past five years, I'm incredibly proud of how far we've come, but even more thankful for the people who helped us get here.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting us. It means more to me and my family than you'll ever know.

Here's to five incredible years and many more to come!

In the summer of 1814, British ships came up the Patuxent and stopped at Lower Marlboro, then a port town in Calvert County. They offered enslaved men and women their freedom in exchange for serving the British war effort. Fourteen people took it.

It wasn’t a simple choice. Going meant leaving family behind and throwing in with an invading army. Staying meant continued enslavement.

Lower Marlboro Freedom Day remembers them. It began in 2014, for the war’s 200th anniversary, and the people who live in Lower Marlboro today still host it.

This year, there are walking tours of the old port town, exhibits on the War of 1812 and the area’s archaeology, speakers, performances, and hands-on activities for all ages. It’s also part of the nation’s 250th.

Where: Lower Marlboro Hall, 3911 Lower Marlboro Road, Owings, and Lower Marlboro United Methodist Church, 6519 Lower Marlboro Lane

When: Saturday, Oct. 17 | 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
