The clocks have fallen back, and the countdown is ON! ⏰

N.C. Highway 12 to Reopen Today at 4 p.m.; Visitors Welcome at That Time

NCDOT has announced that N.C. Highway 12 near the Pea Island Visitor Center will reopen today, Thursday, October 29, at 4 p.m. with a temporary, one-lane detour.

Hatteras Island will reopen to visitors when the road opens, with no entry restrictions in place. Visitor entry restrictions remain in effect until 4 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to contact their accommodations provider to confirm reservations.

Traffic will alternate one direction at a time, managed by an automated traffic signal or an in-person flagger. Expect delays, be patient, allow extra travel time and use extreme caution as crews continue repairs. Follow all posted signs and instructions, and give crews room to work.

⛴️ Emergency ferry service between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe will continue through 8 p.m. this evening (Thursday). The final ferry will depart from each terminal at 8 p.m.

All aboard... if you dare! 🚌

We're taking a trip back to 1946, when the Manteo-Hatteras bus was a familiar sight along the Outer Banks! Long before the conveniences of modern travel, getting around these isolated barrier islands was an adventure all its own. 🕰️

But since it's still spooky season, we can't help but wonder... what if this old bus had a few passengers who never quite made it to their final destination? 👀

Imagine waiting at a lonely roadside stop on a foggy October evening. In the distance, two headlights appear through the mist. An old bus slowly pulls up, its doors creak open, and the driver silently gestures for you to climb aboard.

You glance through the windows. Every seat is occupied, but not a single passenger moves.

Then you notice something strange...

Their clothes are decades out of style, their faces are pale, and the driver doesn't appear in the rearview mirror. 💀

Would you take a seat, or would you wait for the next bus? 🎃
