Before air conditioning, old houses had to work smarter.

One clever feature? Transom windows — those small windows above interior doors. They helped air circulate from room to room even when doors were shut, and they also let natural light reach darker hallways and interior spaces.

It’s a simple design detail, but it made a big difference in keeping homes cooler and brighter.

Did your old house have transom windows? Tell us in the comments.

Why did old houses have so many small rooms? 🏡

Before central heating, smaller rooms were much easier to keep warm with fireplaces and stoves. Interior walls also helped support upper floors, while separate spaces kept cooking, sleeping, entertaining, and daily chores neatly divided.

In other words, those cozy old layouts weren’t random—they were practical.

Do you prefer the charm of old homes or today’s open floor plans?

Why did so many old homes face south?
Long before central heating, homebuilders relied on common sense and the sun. A south-facing house could catch more low winter sunlight, helping warm the rooms naturally. Add in steep roofs for snow and shutters for cold winds, and the house itself became part of the heating system.

Sometimes the old ways were pretty smart. 🌞🏡

🏡 Congratulations to my sellers on closing the sale of their home of more than 15 years!

A home holds so much more than belongings, it holds years of memories, family gatherings, milestones, and chapters of life.
When the kids have grown, moved on, and it’s time to consider downsizing, making that change can feel overwhelming. There are a lot of decisions along the way, both practical, emotional and financial.

But with a plan, patience, and strong communication, we worked through the process together and turned their goal into a reality.
Today, one chapter closes and an exciting new one begins. 💚
Congratulations to my sellers—and thank you for trusting me to help you make this next chapter happen.
