πŸŽ€ A Story of Strength, Courage & Resilience

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we're honored to recognize someone very special to the Hatteras Realty family: our dear friend and former coworker, Christine Bunn. πŸ’—

Christine's journey with breast cancer began in 2018, and after years of challenges, treatments, and incredible perseverance, she is now in remission.

Through it all, Christine has remained a remarkable example of strength, determination, and the power of a loving support system. Her journey hasn't been easy, but her outlook on life and her willingness to share the difficult moments alongside the victories have inspired so many around her.

One message Christine continues to share is that breast cancer awareness should go beyond the color pink. It's about taking care of ourselves, listening to our bodies, supporting advances in early detection and treatment, and standing beside those who are still navigating their own journeys.

In Christine's own words:

"Hold on to your faith and never give up on yourself. You're worth every bit of the fight, whatever it may be."

We also want to recognize the incredible team at UNC REX Cancer Care, whose dedication and compassionate care have played an important role in Christine's journey.

To Christine: We are so proud of you, grateful to know you, and inspired by the strength you continue to share with others. Your story is a reminder that behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, a community, and a life worth fighting for.

And to everyone currently facing breast cancer, celebrating remission, supporting someone through treatment, or remembering someone they've lost, our hearts are with you.

As Christine always says:

"Keep thriving, y'all and I will too." πŸ’žπŸ¦„

In honor of Christine and the countless others impacted by cancer, please consider donating to the UNC Rex Cancer Center Excellence Fund. Your generosity helps support compassionate patient care and provides vital resources to the physicians and caregivers making a difference every day.

Hatteras Island Road & Travel Update

Wednesday, October 21, 2026

We know many of our guests and homeowners are eager for updates on travel to and from Hatteras Island, and we want to keep everyone as informed as possible as recovery efforts continue. ❀️

NC Highway 12 remains closed between the Marc Basnight Bridge (Oregon Inlet) and Rodanthe, including the section through Pea Island.

NCDOT has reported approximately 800 feet of roadway damage and 1,800 feet of protective dune loss near the Pea Island Visitor Center. Crews are actively assessing the damage, clearing sand from affected areas, and working to rebuild and reinforce the protective dunes.

At this time, there is no estimated reopening date for NC 12. We understand how frustrating the uncertainty can be and appreciate everyone's patience as crews work toward restoring safe travel.

Current Travel Information:

Pea Island: NC 12 remains closed between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe. Please avoid traveling through this area.

Hatteras Island: NC 12 was previously reported open from Rodanthe south through Hatteras Village for permitted local travel.

Ocracoke Island: NC 12 remains open, with no reported overwash.

Dare County's State of Emergency and mandatory visitor evacuation remain in effect. Visitors are not permitted to enter Hatteras Island at this time.

We will continue sharing updates as new information becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to follow official sources for the most accurate road and travel information.

A mandatory evacuation order remains in effect for visitors on Hatteras Island. If you have not already evacuated, now is the time to leave before weather conditions deteriorate and N.C. Highway 12 becomes unsafe for travel.

A developing coastal nor’easter is expected to bring worsening conditions, prolonged coastal flooding and repeated ocean overwash that could close N.C. Highway 12 for an extended period, cutting off roadway access to and from Hatteras Island.

The evacuation order applies to visitors in Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. No evacuation has been ordered for Hatteras Island residents or areas north of Oregon Inlet.

Visitors should follow departure instructions from their accommodations provider and take all personal belongings. Do not travel toward Hatteras Island while the evacuation order is in effect. Entry checkpoints are in place.

For questions about access and evacuation procedures, call the Dare County information line at 252-475-5655.

🚨 Hatteras Island Visitor Update | October 16, 2026

As of 6 p.m. this evening, Dare County has declared a State of Emergency for Hatteras Island and issued a mandatory evacuation order for all Hatteras Island visitors, effective at 8 p.m. tonight (Friday, October 16).

With another coastal storm approaching, officials anticipate worsening conditions that could lead to significant ocean overwash, coastal flooding, and an extended closure of N.C. Highway 12.

All visitors currently staying on Hatteras Island are urged to make arrangements to depart before conditions deteriorate and roadway access becomes compromised. Visitors with upcoming reservations should not travel to the island while the evacuation order remains in effect.

❀️ To our Hatteras Realty guests, homeowners, and island community:

We know this is not the news anyone hoped to hear, especially so soon after the challenges our island faced during the recent storm. We understand how disappointing and stressful unexpected changes to your vacation plans can be, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these circumstances together.

The safety and well-being of our guests, homeowners, staff, and neighbors will always come first. Our team is here to help guide our guests through this process, and we will continue sharing updates as information becomes available.

❀️ Forever Colorful. Forever Loved. Forever Claudia.

Today, we remember someone who left a lasting impression on our hearts and throughout the Hatteras Island community.

October 13 marks two years since we said goodbye to our dear friend and former colleague, Claudia Laskow, following her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Many knew Claudia from her years as a Real Estate Broker with Outer Beaches Realty, but to us, she was so much more than a colleague. Even through our transition to Hatteras Realty, the friendships and connections we shared with Claudia remained as strong as ever.

If you knew Claudia, you knew there was never a dull moment. Whether she was sporting one of her signature brightly colored outfits, cracking a joke, feeding the neighborhood stray cats, supporting Friends of Felines, or showing up for our local volunteer fire departments, Claudia had a way of bringing a little extra color and laughter wherever she went.

She loved her community, and her community loved her right back.

Having previously overcome breast cancer, Claudia was no stranger to fighting difficult battles. When faced with pancreatic cancer, she carried that same determination, wit, and unmistakable s***k with her. She never lost sight of who she was, even through the hardest days.

And through it all, by her side was her husband, Jan. Her biggest supporter, her partner, and her constant source of love and strength. The bond they shared was something truly special, and we know just how much his unwavering support meant throughout her journey.

Claudia was surrounded by a community that loved her fiercely, and she faced life's toughest challenges the only way she knew how β€” with grit, a little sass, and a whole lot of fight.

While pancreatic cancer ultimately took Claudia from us, her story remains one of strength, resilience, and love. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we also honor her as a breast cancer survivor and remember the countless lives she touched along the way.

To know Claudia was to love her. And to love her is to never forget her.

Forever in our hearts, Claudia. Your color, laughter, and spirit live on in all of us. ❀️🐾
