Tucked away in Austin at 2200 Hancock Drive, there's a library branch most people don't realize started out as a movie theater. The building opened as the Americana Theater before the city converted it into the Yarborough Branch of the Austin Public Library around 1965.
The branch marked its 60th birthday with a retro party on April 25, 2025, celebrating six decades of serving the neighborhood. It's also picked up a bit of Hollywood history along the way, appearing in the film "Dazed and Confused," which was shot around Austin.
Most people drive right past this building without ever knowing it used to sell movie tickets instead of library cards. 📚 Did you ever go to a movie at the Americana Theater before it became a library?
