Maine’s covered bridges weren’t built to be pretty. The roofs were there to keep rain and snow off the wooden trusses so they wouldn’t rot.
At one point more than 120 of them crossed the state’s rivers and streams. Floods, fires, ice, and heavier traffic took most of them. Today 8 remain, from Babb’s Bridge in Windham to the Artist’s Bridge in Newry to the Porter-Parsonsfield Bridge on the Ossipee River.
Kyle Dennis of Pouliot Real Estate drove to all eight this October, right through peak foliage. If you’re planning a fall drive in Maine, or thinking about making Maine home, this is a good place to start.
