You might see $12,000 listed as a real estate commission on a settlement statement and assume the Realtor takes home the entire amount. But there’s more to the story!

Real estate professionals may have brokerage splits, business expenses, marketing costs, insurance, and taxes to account for. The amount a Realtor ultimately keeps can be very different from the gross commission shown at closing.
