For seven years, Amie and Donovan had a steady apartment and a steady job. Then Donovan fell from a truck, badly injuring his back and ending his career as a roofer. Soon after, Amie was diagnosed with adrenal carcinoma, and a rent hike from $1,200 to $1,600 left the family with no choice but to give up their home. For two years, they moved from shelter to shelter.
“It can happen to anyone,” Amie says. Along the way, she met elderly neighbors priced out on fixed incomes and people managing serious mental health challenges, not the stereotypes so many assume.
Everything changed when they walked into the Anacortes Family Center. With help from their case manager, Rachel, they learned to turn overwhelming obstacles, like replacing lost ID and saving for rent, into small weekly steps. AFC’s food pantry, bus passes, and hygiene supplies let them save every dollar for move-in costs.
Within months, the family had their own permanent apartment. Amie is focused on her recovery from a place of stability, and Donovan now works at Habitat for Humanity.
Amie’s message to anyone struggling: reach out to AFC. A safe, comfortable bed every night made every ounce of effort worth it. Please join us in celebrating Amie and Donovan and wishing them the absolute best as they begin their new chapter! 🎉💙
