A little North Texas homeowner reminder because apparently our sprinkler systems don't know it's October. 🍂
After such a hot, dry September, I think a lot of us got very used to our summer watering schedules.
But now is a good time to actually check your sprinkler controller instead of letting it keep doing whatever it has been doing since July.
DFW Airport received only 0.17 inches of rain in September, compared with a normal 2.72 inches, so yes — our yards really were dry. But as temperatures start changing, our lawns generally don't need the same watering schedule they needed during the summer.
One resource I recently found and thought was worth sharing is Texas A&M AgriLife's WaterMyYard program. You can enter your information and get weekly recommendations for how long your irrigation system actually needs to run based on local conditions.
Basically: water for the weather we're having now, not the weather we had two months ago. 🌱
And while you're standing at the sprinkler controller, October is also a pretty good time to make sure you know how to shut the system off and where your outdoor pipes/backflow preventer are before North Texas inevitably decides to go from 85° to freezing overnight.
Nothing groundbreaking — just one of those little homeowner things that's easy to forget and can save some water, money and headaches later.
