You smell it the moment you open the door. That familiar musty air.

They keep mentioning sinus trouble, headaches, brain fog and fatigue that never seems to lift.

The clues seem clear, but when you mention mold, they just don’t want to hear it.

“I’ve lived here for years.”
“My doctor never mentioned mold.”
“Wouldn’t I be able to see it?”

These symptoms can have many causes. But a persistent musty smell is a reason to investigate the home, even when mold isn’t visible.

Some people just don’t consider mold a possible cause. And it’s hard to consider that the place where you feel most comfortable could be contributing to how poorly you feel.

If this sounds familiar, pass along this article to help explain the health risks of living with mold:

Could Your HVAC System Be Hiding Mold?
You probably don't think much about your HVAC system—until something goes wrong.
But what's happening inside your heating and cooling system?
In this video, we discuss potential mold issues in HVAC systems, what homeowners should look for, and when it makes sense to call a professional.

Your heating system moves more than warm air.

Dust. Pollen. Pet dander. Mold spores. Your HVAC system recirculates indoor air, and particles your filter doesn’t capture can keep traveling through the rooms where your family eats, plays and sleeps.

That’s what better filtration buys: more effective capture of particles you don’t want your family breathing.

A basic, low-efficiency filter catches larger particles while letting more of the smaller ones pass through. A higher-efficiency filter captures more of those smaller airborne particles, including mold spores.

Before heating season gets going, check what’s in your system. If the filter served you through A/C season, it may already be due for replacement.

Buying a new one? Look at the MERV rating, which tells you how effectively a filter captures different particle sizes. EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest efficiency your system can accommodate.

Better filtration helps reduce airborne particles. Any mold growth and the moisture feeding it still need attention.

You’re paying to keep the people you love warm. The air they breathe deserves attention, too.

Before your next filter change, know what you’re buying. EPA’s guide explains how to choose the right filter for your home.

The fatigue. The headaches. The brain fog that makes everyday tasks harder than they should be. You just don’t feel like yourself.

You’ve seen doctors. You’ve had tests. But you’re still not feeling better, and you still don’t have answers.

Are you wondering whether something in your home could be involved? Could there be mold you can’t see or smell?

FACT:
Two people living in the same home can respond very differently to mold. Your partner feeling fine doesn’t rule out a problem in the house.

An ImmunoLytics mold test gives you and your doctors information about mold found in samples from your home.

Our professional lab analysis identifies the mold types found in your samples. Your report includes general information about their potential health effects. The test cannot determine what’s causing your symptoms. You can share the findings with your doctor to discuss what to investigate next.

Your concern deserves attention. Take the next step toward understanding your home.

Compare mold plates, swabs, spore traps, ERMI and HERTSMI-2. See current kit prices, what each method reports, and which test fits your needs.

You've finally wrestled the A/C out of the window. You're ready to tuck it away and forget about it until next summer. Fair enough. But make sure you're not putting a mold problem into storage with it.

Mold needs moisture. Dust and debris inside a damp unit give it a place to grow. Put the A/C away before it's dry, or leave it in a damp basement, and that problem can develop while the unit sits unused.

You may not discover it until the first hot day next summer. That could mean cleanup, a service call, or possibly a replacement if the unit can't be properly cleaned.

There's a health concern, too. Mold exposure can irritate your eyes and airways, cause allergic reactions, and worsen asthma symptoms.

Before storage, switch the unit off and unplug it. Follow your model's instructions for cleaning and draining, remove debris as directed, and let it dry completely. Then choose a dry storage spot.

Already seeing growth or noticing a persistent musty smell? Get it checked before running it again.

A cover may keep dust off. It won't make a damp basement dry.

Before You Test for Mold, Look for These Clues
Mold needs moisture to grow. Before testing, take a closer look at your environment for clues like high humidity, condensation, roof or plumbing leaks, and past water damage.

Gathering this information can help you better understand where a potential mold problem may be coming from—and make your testing more informative.

What If the Mold Isn't Coming From Your Home?

Your home may be the first place you look for mold—but it isn't the only environment where exposure can occur.

This video explains why looking at the other places where you spend significant time can be an important part of investigating potential mold exposure—and where mold testing can help provide answers.
